Sprocket Adaptor retaining washer

I have recently fitted my sprocket adaptor and noticed that when it has been machined it has been done to the exact length of the splined part of the output shaft and does not allow an extra 1mm or so for the washer to go back on so it can be folded over the edges of the nut to stop it coming undone.

As far as I can figure the engine will turn the right way to stop it coming undone anyway but at the same time (as per recent threads) I don't much fancy it popping off at speed sending the prop flailing around everywhere.

What do people reckon??

wot you are saying is the threaded part is too short for a washer and nut?

hmmmmm.......

presumably you cannot fit a castel nut for the same reason.

hmmmmm.........

yes the nut fits on but the splines on the output shaft don't extend far enough to get the washer on and engaged on the splines meaning that it's pointless as it can just spin.'
.
Good idea with the castel nut but don't much fancy drilling the output shaft

I guess the spacer shim is probably machined that thickness as some may not bother with / know about the nut retaining washer, and a prop adapter that can slide on the splines a little is not a good idea.

How thick is the shim supplied, if its quite thin could you not put the retaining washer between the prop adapter and the shim and the tabs still reach the nut, or does the shim go on the back face?

Failing that just get a new shim machined up thats a mm or so thinner or take a bit off the existing one if its thick enough to get hold of in the lathe jaws.

Hmm, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the "shim"?? There's the output shaft, the adaptor and a nut but no spacer/shim?
