Can you use a piece of the same sump to fill in the gap? Perhaps a piece of the bit you've just cut out?

Normal ally MIG (or TIG) wire worked for mine.

i was going to use the bit ive just chopped out, but there are some wierd shapes on my sump and it will be tricky to get it to line up again properly. Plus im going to extend it so i will need some plate for that. I asked someone and they asked what grade wire i was after. anyone know?

Have you migged ally before? Unless you have an expensive mig set then you will struggle a lot , the wire bunches up and jams so you really need a mig with a torch with its own built in feed rollers.
Mig also tends to be porous , so ideally prepare it all then find someone to tig weld it for you.
