Changing Big End Bearings on an Yamaha R1 Engine

Do we have any R1 experts on here. Anyone know what sort of job it is to change the Big end bearings on one?

It's just that I've been offered one that is in great condition appart from a big end knock.

I've stripped a Rover V8 and done the big ends on that and it was no problem. I don't have an issue with doing the job, it's just I would like to know if there are any major pitfalls or should I just steer clear.

Try the BEC list on yahoo Vince. It may prove a very costly excercise. I have read of people scrapping the engine for the same reason saying that they needed new crank and possibly rods, not just a regrind and oversize bearings like a car. Also not 100% reliable afterwards as the cranks integrity has been compromised.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

if its anythign like my KH250 two stroke was, the big ends dont come apart like on a car. the crank and rods are pressed together as an assembly - the crank must come apart to get the con rods off.

May not be the case on this engine tho....
