CWP for Sierra 7" LSD, same as non LSD??

Yep, that's the question, I have a 7" lsd sierra XR4x4 diff and been offered a different ratio CWP that has come out of a 7" non lsd diff - are they different or the same ???

You can certainly swap the ratio's over to make a hybrid LSD unit with the different ratio's but the usual way to do it is to swap the actual LSD unit along with the output shafts into the differential case of whatever ratio you want to use. You simply unbolt the crown wheel from your LSD, bolt on the crownwheel from the open diff, and then replace this into the open differential case. This saves having to reset the backlash which is done with shims behind the pinion.

So is it a loose CWP you have been offered or a complete diff??

It's a loose CWP, your thoughts? - to be honest I have very little knowledge about diffs and especially LSDs, I would be having it rebuild by my localish transmission man.Regards,Martin

Rebuilding with a loose CWP isnt a simple job but certainly one thats possible at home and many have done it (I managed it on a Cortina axle but was about 7 years back now when i changed the internals from a 3.45:1 ratio to a 4.1:1). Spray paint put onto the crown wheel teeth can be used to check the meshing of the teeth after rebuilding / reshimming.

Fitting the LSD unit into a complete open diff however is a pretty simple job and one i'd suggest you can do at home yourself in under 30 mins once the differential is out of the car. I guess it comes down to what ratio you are going for as to how easy it is to pick up an open diff at reasonable cost. A 3.92 should be pretty cheap, a 3.38 not so cheap and a 3.14 b!oody expensive!!

Add the cost of the CWP to the rebuild cost from the transmission people and i guess you may consider buying a complete diff and getting stuck in with the Haynes manual to help you.

There is only one way to gain the knowledge you need so my advice would be to give it a go yourself if the figures make sense.

My main problem is that I've been searching for ages for a 4.44:1 ratio CWP. They are rare as anything, and although Kamdiffs, etc, list them - nobody has stock and the manufacturers are not making them. This is the first set at 4.44:1 I've managed to locate so feel I should get it -if it physically fits- and then get it professionally built.
That looks like my only choice - but, can I take it that the CWP for a 7" sierra diff is the same for an open as that for a limited slip differential?
Regards
Martin
