Which V6 and why
Basically what the title says really!
I'm still seriously looking at building an Aeon Epona, and would prefer to fit a v6 to it. The number 1 choice thus far is the Alfa lump as this
leads to a nice upgrade path through the various forms of the engine.
I fear, however, that there may be a better/cheaper/lighter/higher revving/nicer sounding engine out there that I've forgotten about. The
cheaper bit is fairly important as the Alfa lump is also fairly expensive. But does have the sound I'm looking for. All out power is less
important as I'm after a mini GT type car. Quick, but good on the cruise to. High revving is good, but only because I prefer that type of engine
as opposed to a low revving slugger of an engine.
I know of the alfa lump, the mazda versions, the KV6 and the Ford V6. I know very little about the vauxhall lump or the Honda V6s. What else is there
out there? Any one have any good or bad points, reliability issues or useful hints about anyone's V6s? The potential for tuning/faffing about in
the future is important to me.

Expensive gearbox and/or bell housing though. Although the same applies for the Alfa lump. And it's not very pretty.

Ask anyone north of the border who attends speed events and I suspect the answer would be Rover KV6.
With the right tuning, it's a monster.

I picked the Mazda 1.8 V6 mainly because its the smallest V6 I could find - a bonus is the 2.5 is allmost identical so an easy up-grade , plus its
available with nearly 200 BHP (standard ! )
Not the easiest of conversions though.......

How reliable is the KV6? I've heard there is a common problem with something in the inlet?
As for the Mazda, is it a high revving little beasty? And how difficult? New bellhousing/flywheel etc?

I'd love to build a mini GT racer with a Jag V6 myself as used in the Palmer JP1. Looked awsome when i saw it on tv (was it 5th Gear??).
Bet it isnt cheap though

Claire, any idea what the MX5 gearbox is good for, power-wise? I don't want to get carried away with tuning and need new parts once a month!

Sorry - no idea on that but I`m working on the theory that since my Fury is so much lighter than an Mx5 it shouldnt be under any more strain....

I'd stick with your first choice, the alfa one.
Vauxhall one is crap.
Ford one is ok but nowt special.
KV6 "CAN" be good but expensive when you add in all the bits you need to make it reliable and powerful.
Mazda ok but not well catered fot by tuners in terms of bits.
Peugeot-Citroen actually a pretty good v6, but no idea about rwd bits for them
Nissan v6 pretty good too, but you'd prob want the 350Z motor and gearbox and I guess they are not cheap.
I'd still stick with the alfa. Tough as old boots, and heaps of go faster stuff available for them, plus they really make good power and bottom
end is strong as std.
Retro RWD is the way forward...........automotive fabrication, car restoration, sheetmetal work, engine conversion
retro car restoration and tuning

PLenty of folk fit the big FM2 turbo on the mx5 & that tops out at 270horses (!) They have to sort the clutch but I never heard a mention of any
gearbox woes.

Talk to Razman - he's built one with a Ford V6 motor - I'm sure he'll provide you witht wealth of information on it. I believe he
also has a good relationship with Aeon which may prove useful to you in researching the project.
