difference between a type 3 and type 9 box

I've just found out from the trusty burton power catalogue that i've got a type 3 box instead of a type 9 (always thought there was such a thing as a 4 speed type 9.... dough!)

Can anyone tell me the difference between the two? what i'm looking for is the following:

1) are the output splines different?
2) is the overall length the same?
3) is the rear support in the same place?
4) what about the gear lever, is that in the same place too?

So basically what i'm after is wheter the type 9 is a "plug and play" replacement for a type 3. I wouldn't like to have a new propshaft made up when i decide to upgrade later to a zetec / type 9 combo....

type 9 is basicly a 3 with 5th gear on the back,it will be about 2" longer and gear lever will be 2" further back, might as well find a type 9,plenty seirras littering the streets

Right then, next question (btw, thanks conrod!)

Will a front universal joint off a type 2 gearbox (as fitted to all MKI/MKII escorts except RS/Mecico/Twin cam) fit a type 3 (1,6 Sierra 4speed with removable bellhousing) box? The shaft diameter should be teh same, as the burton power catalogue quotes the same part# for the rear oil seal&bearing. But do the splines match?

If so, are the escort UJ's servicable? (eg. can you take 'em apart)

I'm having seriuos troubles here...... But i'll get back to fitting my ZX12R can now (can't wait to fire her up! )

escort 4 speed type prop is smaller,i used an escort auto prop, that fitted, some transit and ldv sherpa props will also fit,the uj,s are staked so not replacable, prop repaierers will make you one if you give them the relevant info

Once more.....

Just one more question (i hope....) Will a type nine fit a type 3 bellhousing? I'm guessing these wil all be fairly similar but i'm not sure.

Thanks,
Sebastiaan
