FZR1000 bike engine

Hello all

I have been offered a very nice FZR1000 Yamaha at a very reasonable cost and i am thinking if this engine would be good in a MK or similar.

They are 140-145 bhp standard and top 170 mph in the bike they were the original superbike of there time.
The engine is sweet.

Any comments on it suitability or has anybody used one in a kit could give me some feedback would be great

Thanks

Had a go on one years ago one very quick bike in there time,

my only concern would be gearing if i remember right weren't they five speed?

If you can have a look at a manual for the gear ratios you could have a play with gear calculate

Difficult one to answer that its down to what you want from it!

In my opinion you need a theoretical top speed of close to 120 to get a reasonable rpm at cruising speed probably a little difficult with a five speed.

Someone's probably fitted one or at leasts looked into using one before, they will probably be along shortly with a bit more info!

Hello Thunderace

It is a 1992 1000 EXUP Genesis with 10,000 miles on it and i can get the complete bike for a little less than you mentioned.
My thought was to ride the bike around during the summer and then take everything i need from it and sell all the other bike bits off making some money back.

A friend had one of these when they were first launched and it was a major let down.

I told him so. He and another friend agreed

At that time there was a gentlemans agreement in place where the big four sold bikes with only 125bhp.

I think you'll find quite a few problems with a pre-EXUP FZR motor: -

  1. Very little midrange.
  2. Final dirve gearing incorrect.
  3. 5-speed box.
  4. Unknown oil control when in a car.
  5. Weak gearbox.

I would look at buying a carbed R1 package instead.
