Knackered engine ?

I had my engine running today , mainly to see how close the fueling was - I have a basic Co meter and a wideband sensor set-up .
The worrying thing is - the meter is showing 3.5% on the right hand bank , and 12.5% on the left
There is allso noticeable white smoke from the left hand exhaust which gets less as it warms up .
Any ideas ?

Possibly blown the head gasket??? If it was burning oil i'd expect the smoke to be blue.

White smoke is usually a water/anti-freeze leak into the combustion chambers.

Might just be the head gasket as Paul says.

Ah right. Well hopefully the head isnt warped if it is a head gasket!!! Can you do a compression test on it at all as BigWasa suggests?? Worth checking the oil for coolant / coolant for oil etc. Any odour apparent to the smoke??

I asumed it to be the big old v6

You can buy a dye testing kit that will tell if there are exhaust gasses in the coolant.

Are you loosing any coolant ?

What gearbox are using on the back of that ?

Its on an Mx5 gearbox via an adaptor plate and on-off ally flywheel.............it looked easy when I started but turned into a bit of a mission !
It runs well enough to rev clean ( OMG it sounds awesome ! ) , but I havnt driven it yet - that joy will come next week if I can get it through an MOT .

Wouldn't have thought a head gasket failure would cause a rise in C.O. I would be looking at overfueling on the bank that is high, possibly faulty injector? Is the cooling system installed and filled? if it is, as big wasa says the dye testing kit would tell if it is head gasket in a few seconds and cheaper than a head set although if it is head gasket you would have to buy one.

Agreed, Co% is burnt fuel, sounds rich to me Have a good look at the fueling on that bank.
