Zetec Type 9 Starter Bellhousings.......

This seems odd to me!!!
I have a silver top zetec.
Two type 9's not sure what vehicles they are from, assumed both sierra's (ebay)
A starter from a 1.8 CVH sierra
1. Bell housing has an elongated buldge for the starter like this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAPRI-ESCORT-MK1-MK2-PINTO-5-SPEED-TYPE-9-FORD-GEARBOX_W0QQitemZ130220912749QQihZ003QQcategoryZ27377QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem

2. The other bell housing doesn't have the elongation.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140213145160

Both fit the zetec, however the starter motor
onlys fit no 1.
I thought they were all the same?
Have I got the right starter and should I pair it up with bell housing no1?
Thanks

Mike

I have the silvertop zetec the 1.8 strter is deffo needed so therefore use the type 9 which it fits. Have you had the sump modified as the starter will foul the side and requires some cutting and welding then theres the shortening and baffling of the sump

can probably post some pics if needed

CVH starter (from a type9) is a bit shorter than the pinto starter and would not engage the pinto fly wheel when I fitted it also the pinto starter would not fit through the tin shroud that goes between the type 9 bell housing and engine so it looks like it could be the CVH starter that is your peoblem.

the cvh is definitelly the strter needed, keep the zec flywheel and clutch. I have been involve with the building of 2 silvertop Zetecs with Type nine boxes. The other recommended starter is from the 2 litre ohc found in some sierras and granadas

So hopefully I have the right starter just need to swap the gearboxes round.
Interestingly my engine is from a 4x4 mondeo, with the wrong bell housing the starter does fit, I'llhave to try it with the other bell housing tonight!
The sump is completly different, it looks like the engine in the 4x4 my have sat with quite a tilt.
Any pictures will help!
Thanks

Mike

Here's a pic of mine... Starter is from a 1.8 CVH Sierra, DOHC one will fit as well. Standard zetec clutch and no mods to the sump. Engine is from a 1994 Escort Rescued attachment P6110001.JPG

the gearbox in the pic looks identical to one of mine. Still intrigued to know the difference is type 9 bell housing as on ebay all i looked for was a type 9 box and paid no attention to the bell housings!
