Last minute trials and tribulations

Why is it, that a car can be working perfectly and then at the 11th hour, problems come thick and fast.

Tomorrow, we set off for Laon in France to take part in a fantastic event that takes place in this beautiful and historic town.http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x248fy_circuit-historique-27052007-laon-tr_auto

The last few days have been manic trying to solve a host of problems that seemingly have just happened.

I know I have mentioned under-bonnet temperature before but I thought that had been solved. However, after a spirited drive, I found that foam strip on which the back edge of the bonnet sits had melted and fused itself to the bonnet jamming it fast. I fabricated another heat deflector and that I hope has done the trick.

Next, the battery appeared to be flat and in fact it was. I couldn't understand this having been running the car fairly regularly and to my mind it should have been fully charged. On checking, I found the voltage was well down on the optimum 14 volts. Apparently, the battery had been progressively dropping down and the alternator, although working perfectly, had not been recharging it. It needed a boost charge to stir things up and this brought it up to full charge. With the load of the headlights, management system and fuel pump this was on the limit of my old style Lucas alternator. I now have a fully charged battery and a 70 Amp alternator. I hope the problem has been solved but I'm packing jump leads just in case.

Just this afternoon, on the way to fill up with petrol I noticed a clicking sound from the front n/s. I think the noise is from the brake pad rattling in its housing but I still have to check it.

All these things seemed perfectly alright until just a few days ago. Why is it that they wait until the last minute before surfacing? Better now than on the way to Laon I suppose.

Anybody else had the same experience with last minute panics?

John

Always!

My dad went to Laon a couple of years ago and brought back hundreds of pictures he'd taken. Looks like a really interesting event with some very rare cars (lots of Bugatti's etc).

Look on the bright side - at least the issues are right before you go rather than when you are actually on your way!! That would be more the sort of luck i would get
