XE cam tappets stripdown?

Took my F27 to have the carbs set up and timing checked on Mon, and collected it today, the guy from the garage didnt want to stick it on the rolling road as the tappets were loud, and he didnt want to risk damaging it
I understand that you can strip the followers down by tapping them on a wooden plank and clean the old oil out

So I've whipped the cam cover off and all 8 of the followers on the exhaust side are rock hard! - should I be able to get some movement or do you think they have locked solid? and would this mean that the valves havent been operating properly?
managed to strip one down tonight and clean it up, and the spring is working fine.
on assembly to the engine -do i soak em in oil or let em fill up on start up? I have heard of people doing both!
any helpful ideas greatly appreciated
Greg

I presume you're knocking out the middle of the tappet and also using a thin knitting needle to work the valve in the middle of the smaller part free from crud?

If you rapidly compress the little valve in the smaller part, whilst under petrol, you'll see a load of buildup coming free. Keep compressing till no more crud comes out.

For re-assembly, put them in hot oil and let them cool. During the cooling process the oil will be sucked into the tappet.

That said, whatever you do it'll never be quiet till you've run it for a few minutes after reassembly.

Remember to get the cam caps on in the correct places too
