Luego Velocity engine

Hi,
This is my first time on this site and also my first build. In fact it's the first time I have been on a forum at all.
You may remember seing a Luego Velocity kit on ebay that had not been started, the grey chassis with grey bodywork, well I bought it.
It was ideal for me as the donor car had alrady beem disposed of and this got around the problem of my wife not wanting a donor vehicle on the drive.
It came with a MT75 gearbox from a 1992 XR 4x4 and a diff from a std sierra.
It also has an ehaust and engine mounts supplied to suit a Ford Zetec engine,
Where do I start? Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where to start looking for an engine that will suit the gearbox and exhaust I already have.
What sort of vehicles and what year range should I be looking at and where is the best place to look?
Sorry if this seems a daft question but as I say, I am new to kit car building.
I will appreciate any help that anyone can give me.
Kind regards Ian

Welcome to the mad house

Some good info on Zetec 'E' engines here, which may give you a better idea of what you are looking for. Plenty of these on ebay and at scrappers. May also be some people on the forum who have an engine or too lying around.

Where abouts in Notts are you?

Greetings Ian and welcome to the mad house. Congratulations, also, on become a member of the Luego owners club. You will find our particular brand of inanity elsewhere on this site.

Any way as to your question, Ideally you need to find a very early (1990ish I believe, but if I'm wrong someone else will correct me) Ford Escort or Mondeo ( I believe it is possible that the Escort was the first to use the Zetec) with the 1800 or more preferable 2.0 Zetec engine. The older the car you purchase as a doner then the less likely it will be that you would need to use a catalytic converter on the exhaust.
If ( as I have just re-read your post) you do not want to buy a doner car then you need to be scouring Breakers yards and maybe even E-bay for a suitable engine. Again the prefered engine would be the 2.0 Zetec and the older it is then the less need for a cat in the exhaust.

I hope this helps.

Enjoy
JGG.

Welcome to the club . Shouldn't worry too much about getting the engine just yet as you have plenty of work to do before you need to fit it. You may find you are spending plenty of time in breakers yards and may come across an engine that way although being able to drive the car beforehand will give you a better idea of the state of the engine . Come and see us at the Peterborough show in August , we will tie Clive (JGG) up so he doesn't bite There may still be a build manual on the Luego website which should give you some idea how to go about building and plenty of help on here

Looks like a great deal, well done. I don’t know much about the 2wd MT75 box but I do know that you can get a prop shaft made to measure for about £120 from a chap who advertises in the magazines. I am not sure how the MT75 fits into a Velocity so it might be worth just sitting it in the frame to check before you go too far along that path. But, as mentioned, you have a fair amount to do before the engine comes into play.
I also have a build manual which I could copy and send you if required, U2U me your address if wanted. The only thing I would suggest you look out for is the crush tubes being too short on the suspension bushes, other than that the Velocity is great to build and fantastic to drive. Great choice of car, I loved the build and am sure you will to. And the owners club have great sessions at the major shows, come and join us, you only need a tent and a drink or two.

Worth doing a search on here for crush tube info . A little time spent on initial assembly will save you loads of grief later

Hi Mate,

I am on my second Zetec - MT75 velocity so if you need any help let me know.

the MT75 fits fine. In terms of zetec engines, you have two options...

1.8 from a fiesta/escort/orion. This is the easiest option. you can retain the efi if you want to go with that option, or you can use throttle bodies. with a 1.8, the water pump will be running the right way, light flywheel, shallow sump etc..

with a 2.0, you will have to change the water pump ( this is if you want a simplistic water pump - alternator scenario ). the 2.0 is about 130 bhp in a mondeo, which some say can go upto 160 with carbs.

the choice is yours.

get the car in a rolling chassis state. and a little tip - dont use nylocks on the suspension bolts just yet, and dont put the ali panels on the sides just yet either - the manual suggests fitting these first, but i think thats a mistake. With the panels on, you get much better access to the engine bay area, and then when you are ready - just take the front suspension out ( remember - you have only used normal nuts so its easier to do )!

my archive has lots of pictures if your stuck.

ian.
