diff servicing
Was wondering how easy it is to service a diff myself, cos have heard that it is only worth getting done by someone who knows exactly what they are
doing.
Is it worth getting a diff service kit and doing it myself? If not anyone know ehere to get it done?

Why does it need servicing?
If it isnt making any strange noises, change the oil and leave it well alone IMHO...
Dont just build it.....make it!

the first time i looked at the car, it seemed as though one of the gaskets may have been leaking, as there was a coating of oil at the back of the
diff, nowhere near the breather or drain plug.
If this is the case, I would rather do anything that needs to be done now, rather than find it out come MOT time.
Just tend to be a little bit cautious with the build, which is why it's taking so goddamn wrong.
but... if you gonna do it, do it properly
any suggestions?

hmm, at the back, near the rear gasket???? I think its a case of new gasket and "they all do that sir"

Evening All,
I've just fitted my Sierra diff.Not yet filled it with oil and the chassis is on a build stand.Just out of curiosity I turned the pinion drive
flange and one of the drive shafts turned at a greater rate than the other one. I found that I could grip the drive shaft whilst turning the pinion
drive flange and the drive shaft didn't turn.
Is this as it should be or have I got a problem with my diff?

Did the other shaft turn? If so then that's exactly how an open diff should behave.

I also would like to know if can recommend a company to service my rear axle as i've changed the crownwheel and pinion and it needs shimming to
remove free play.

Dan, I think you might need to get a list of all the places around the country the amount of travelling you do !!

9904169 you sound like an engineer! ie. if its not broken why isnt it broken! Is that what you are doing at uni?

Depends where you are. If it is an Escort diff it just needs adjusting, Sierras are a bit more complicated.

Nah, am not engineer, but funny you should say...
My grandad was/is an engineer, and taught me just about everything I know, based on that priciple.. Not just how, but why...
anyway, am immunologist at uni, but really wanted to do motorsport engineering!!
Damn that careers councillor.
So, everything comes from books at my stage. Very jealous of those whose profession it is.

Jason I'm getting old now and have started to settle down only oxford for the next three years hopefully.
My axle is a capri with a lsd fitted.
So does anyone know of any good companies?

Diff servicing
Hi, I could also do with some advice regarding servicing Escort diffs. Mine looks like it's been sitting at the bootm of a lake for years and
all the bearings are rusted. How difficult is it to replace all the bearings or do I need special tools (as the Haynes book states) to get it set up
properly? Also does anybody know where I can get the bearings from - or where I can get it repaired if I can't do it myself? Does all that
make sense? Thanks, Speedy
