rover v8 engine problem
...wondered if anyone could help with this
i finally got the vindicator registered and its now sitting in my garage. drove from birmingham to nottingham on its maiden real run and it was fine.
took it out a couple of nights later and suddenly lost power after ten minutes.
we traced it back to the ignition module which came brand new from RPI bolted to the brand new distributor ffom them.
phoned rpi and asked why their bit only lasted 65 miles and they thought it might be the coil drawing too much current and killing the module (as it
wasnt one that they recognised)
replaced the module tonight and the car started first turn. just wondered what you thought bout the possibility of the coil being the reason for
this?
cheers
Paul

Most common cause of ignition module failure is a poor earth.
Beware of the Goldfish in the tulip mines. The ONLY defence against them is smoking peanut butter sandwiches.

Does it have a heat sink on the back face where it screws on? If so did you put heat transfer grease on it? Overheating will kill it.

grease
yes the failed module still had all the grease on it when removed, and the condition of it suggested that it hadnt got hot. which you would expect
really as its only covered 70 miles since the engine was put in.

Are you in dispute with RPI about this? Do you feel that they should replace the module under guarantee?
If you do, then I am inclined to agree with you. It does sound like a simple component failure and not one that's been brought about by
mis-use

Rovers did a few modules, the ones that attached to distributors being the last of the distributor run and the inferior due to heat.
Oldly enough the SDI module bolted on the inner wing is the best one.
Still unusual for it to fail so quickly, but as they have replaced not a worry.

i'm not in dispute with them as such. i rang up and wasnt over impressed with their response. far from being concerned that the part i'd
bought hadnt lasted, they were more keen to sell me some different ones that cost more money.
and they didnt replace the ignition module. they offered to sell me another one for 35 quid. but i bought one from the parts shop at the end of the
street. (for £25!) i wanted to find it out if it actually was the module so just went and bought one.
still not sure if the underlying cause is the coil. but it went well today and restored my mile wide grin.
rpi can wait till next week, a shame though as i'd had a very good expeirence with them up till now.
just dissapointed in them. i will be getting back in touvh with them later.

most peoples experience with RPI seems that they just want to sell, which from a business point of view is fine, but as a customer pretty pants.
I got fed up with the dizzy malarky and switched the complete electronic ignition via MS, absolutley fabulous, transformed the car, allot smoother and
more importantly, became a bullet.
