Zetec - issues?

Hi All

I am going to be building a MK indy but cant decide between bec or zetec unit. I was readying the Which kit kit car building manual which states that fitting a zetec to a 7 kit can be tough in matching gearbox to engine and modifications required as gearbox is front wheel drive version which must be converted to drive the rear wheels? Secondly there is an issue with the complex injection and engine management system which can cause issues.
I would be interested to hear from any owners that have used Zetecs to see if there have been any issues, are the above items a problem?
thanks.
James

If you use a Zetec then you mate it to a Sierra rear wheel drive gearbox. There would be problems if you tried to use the Mondeo/Focus/Escort front wheel drive box!

Its academic though because you know you want a BEC really! If you can't decide then you've not been in a BEC.

Now where's the popcorn...

As above, its a simple case of bolting a Zetec to a Type 9 Sierra box. You will need to look at the flywheel, starter and clutch components but this isnt hard as loads have done it before using various suppliers (Dunnel, Burton Power etc) or use a 1.8L Zetec flywheel.

Again though, you really want a Bike engine

As for the Injection etc. I through all that away and put Bike carbs on with a megajolt points system.#

Other options are aftermarket megasquirt injection or throttle bodies.

But then again thats academic if those BEC folk get hold of you .

I have a 1.8 zetec onto type 9 (Sierria) RWD) and it has give no major problem.

At least you don;t have to build a car at under 100kg and live on a premenant diet to use it as with a BEC.

Fitting a zetec is simple enough. I agree you should just bin all the standard injection.

You could go BEC - it just depends whether you want a real car or something that makes your ears bleed over 70 mph

I have a type 9 box with a 1.8 fly wheel and a new full clutch with the longer thrust bearing plus the spigot bearing and dust cover plate.

Ie every thing you need to stick on the back of a zetec and yours for £125

Injection, you could use the standard system if pre Pats. Its not hard.
