pinto/injection sierra fuel pump

Hi,

With our 3/4 built mk (2.0 pinto based) we got a fuel pressure regulator - the usual aftermarket adjustable type with filter/bowl on the bottom. This only has an inlet and outlet, no return to tank.

except without the clear sight glass.

However the fuel pump we have is the one from the injection sierra. Would I be right in thinking that this pump will be high pressure and therefore require an adjustable regulator with a return to tank line?

It just strikes me as odd that the bloke went to the effort of buying this regulator that isn't suitable.

Hi what carb's are you using?
if bike you want a electric pump of a bike

sorry forgot to say dellorto 40's.

I assume the '2 port' regulators simply restrict flow? Which might be ok for low pressure pumps, but im guessing no good for injection type pumps.

an injection pump will throw fuel in so you will indeed require a return before the regulator.

The return will require a restrictor sized so that the fuel pipe effectively becomes a fuel rail with slightly more pressure than you need.

Better off getting a proper low pressure pump IMHO.

Yep, the carbs require about 3psi, the injection pump will be more like 30. So best to get a proper facet red top pump and use the regulator you have (they are the best ones). Alternatively you could use the high pressure pump, but it is more complicated and requires extra pipework, new reduction regulator etc.
Unless of course you inted to go EFI in the future?

No intention of going EFI in the future - the future will be either zetec or duratec on bike carbs.

So, if i did want to use this pump, I need a return line tee'd off after the pump but before the regulator? Then an appropriately sized restrictor in the return line?

Pinto mechanical pumps fit in the block. Reputedly good for up to 150bhp. Dobt an injection pump will be OK for carbs.

ive tried a facet red top with single carb and it was way too powerful. Regulator couldnt cope with the pulsing effect of the pump. Ended up changing to mech pump.

Now run bike carbs with std bike pump.
