Stick or twist?

Hi,
I currently have a 2.0 pinto built by HT racing with HT1 cam and race head.
It currently runs on Dellorto 40's which need re tuning, but i cant decide if its worth putting some 45's on before the set up. I have some sitting here and not sure if i will gain anything and how much woul dhave to be spent on the 45's to get them working better than the 40's.

Whats your opinions??
I assume the 40's are perfectly jetted etc for the engine (dont know as only had it a month) i know the 45's need rebuilding etc.
Is it worth it??

cheers

Stick! What size chokes are in the 40's?

Twist! get some bike carbs and you will wonder how you ever did without them.

They will be much easier to set up, stay in balance (unlike webers) and give better fuel economy.

Depends what you want to use it for.

If you want best power possible then use the 45's with big chokes.

If you still want it to pull throughout the rev range and idle smoothly at the expense of a small amount of top end power then keep the 40's

Depending on the spec of the engine you may not get much benefit form the 45's anyway

Cheers

Mark

But they are Dellortos which (IMHO) are much better than Webers!

talk to roland at HT

they built the engine so will no whats best...

i would think 45 will over fuel.

unless you had some serious work done on the engine.

dellorto's both sets.
Not sure what chokes either sets are running.
I just got to thinking that if they set it up like this then surely it would be better to keep it as is. Not sure though.

As for bike carbs, i dont know enough about them, ie. Will the run with my lumination ignition that the carbs run on currently??
would i get more power??

Not sure as i want to build a supercharged engine sometime next year.....

cheers again

Ditto the choke question....This is the key question....you need to find out..

for a 2ltr, 40's with 34mm chokes would be my preference.....Better low down performance. I don't see a need to go 45's until the choke requirements go to 36mm.

i dont think i will bother with the 45's as i dont wana spend loads more on this engine. Either re tune the 40's and prob be good enough, or i am tempted by bikes carbs.
Can they offer the same sort of power output and are there people out there that know how to RR set them up??
Would me lumination still work with it?
Also the heavy cam it has.
cheers

Your ignition system has no effect on your carb preference.......Unless you use a throttle position sensor in which case you simply swap it over....

As previously mentioned, check the choke size in both sets of carbs....This is easy to do, as the size is usually stamped on them...If the 40's have small 30mm chokes then this would not be enough for you engine..at which point check the 45's - If these are aove 38mm, then again, may be same problem....34mm on the 40's-36mm on 45's would be about right...

The 45's my give you ultimately a few more HP at the top end of the rev range, and with carbs it's always a trade off...Would you prefer higher top end, or more low down punch?....

Either way, carbs will need jetting on a rolling road, but it may also be worth talking to you local rolling road to what they suggest....

To help you understand this subject a little more...take a look at this:

It's well worth a read.
