Unless you are familiar with them, I would say you might be better to let a pro rebuild it for you... Getting the backlash set correctly is rather tricky...

I took mine to Procomp. For £200 they rebuilt it with my Quaife LSD, and set it up for the car. Money well spent IMHO.

If you want to do it yourself, check out the Haynes for the Mk2 escort - there is plenty of info in their on how to rebuild and setup.

rebuilding a diff looks easy to do.....looks easy. it is actually very easy to get wrong and they are very fussy about how they are put together, it doesn't have to be far out to trash the diff in very short order. best left to those who know (and are properly tooled up for it)

Confused but excited. - 29/11/11 at 08:50 PM

IIRC someone on the bay does a complete re-build, including parts for £120ish, for a std English axle.

Hi

Our prices for a rebuild start from £120. The others are just charging what we do. Difference is we use high quality bearings and parts and the fitment of a solid spacer is STD issue.

Cheers Matt

You just may be hearing from me procomp i had the input bearing break up on my 3.54 diff last year on my way to south france noisy screetch and it went straight in to side of road before it got expensive. the crown and pinion look ok for reuse but the 3.89 i use now is a little lowly geared for touring.

Solid spacer is a must. I've done 3 diffs. Each breaking teeth for no reason i could tell. Until i was told about the cruch spacer

How much play is normal in an Escort axle (Salisbury if it makes a difference). I reckon I have 10 degrees play wheel to wheel and about 5 degrees on the prop input. One of the shaft seals is leaking so I'll be taking them both shafts out to check and while they are out...

Shaun.
