MOT balls up, sump clearance!
bi22le - 28/5/11 at 04:38 PM

Hi all,

I took my car for its MOT today and they were pleasent people. 3 gents running a Mr Clutch centre. I only went there becasue I had a £25 voucher!.

Any way half way through he wants to slide a jack under. The jack is attached to the ramps so cant be removed. The jack was too high to get under my sump so he could not test it. They did not charge me.

So Im now home, shiny new 'C' spanner in hand (Its ok Jeff, I have brought my own now ) and jacking the ride height up. Problem being is I dont think my shocks are long enough to get the travel I need. Its off of the front wheels, so there is no load and now I think the shock is on full extension. It feels like I could keep moving the collar up but its just compressing the spring.

Floor to sump distance required is 85mm (not OTT!). Its a RAW Striker so inboard suspension. Currently its at 75mm. If I just keep on winding to double check will I cause damage to the shock or should I just go to a MOT'd station that has a low jack?

Thanks for your advice and have a good bank holiday. This one has snuck up on me really!!!

couple of blocks off wood on the ramps would sort you out, just drive up them to lift.

Sounds like mr clutch is not very clever....

My mot station has bits of wood to get low cars on his ramp and bit of wood to get jacks under. It's not rocket science!

I'd go back with some suitable bits of wood and show them.

Forgot to mention that I asked about the wood and they said they need all 4 wheels down. Although the penny has dropped!! I could of put the blocks half way down the ramps in line with the jack and then stopped in the normal place. Doh!

It is insignificant to my most recent discovery. . . . .

My engine mount is broke!!

Next thing they will tell you is they can't test the brakes on the rollers due to lack of clearance. Tell them to use their Tapley meter!
As already suggested take some bits of wood

Where I used to go they just used to get hold of the front and hoik it up a bit, no problem.

"Where I used to go they just used to get hold of the front and hoik it up a bit, no problem. "

Thats what my mot guy did, as my sump is 3" of the deck

looks like they didint want to test it ..as said before all ive done in the past is to get a couple of the lads to lift the car u can then slide the jack under or alterativly drive onto the turn plates as for the brakes all you have to do is decellometer them ive tested loads with no problems

Low car is not a fail, should have punched him!!

I "eased" mine up so the nice gent could get the jack under mine too. That was at a place in Ashby de la Zouch recommended by Claire, excellent and very helpful too.

I'd say the £25 voucher tells the story. It's to get punters through the door and generate fails to be repared by the workshop. You were never going to let them fix anything it failed on, so test aborted for the first reason they could find.

Mine caught on the jacking beam when being tested yesterday. Just called me over to push it up.

or if they haven't got blocks of wood, reverse the car on

I think someone has hit the nail on the head?

Thanks for all of the posts. They did call another guy over an try and push (the car was 6ft in the air on ramps) the car up to get the jack under to test it. I dont think they just wanted me out due to not making any money on me or required repairs.

The replies I have got have not realy addressed the question I had so Ill clear it up a bit more.

" So Im now home, shiny new 'C' spanner in hand (Its ok Jeff, I have brought my own now ) and jacking the ride height up. "If I just keep on winding to double check will I cause damage to the shock or should I just go to a MOT'd station that has a low jack?"

Can anybody answer this or give any advice on the full extension of the shock and what damage that could cause?

Thanks,

Bizz

Jack the front of the car up yourself so that the front wheels are off the ground - that is the max extension you are going to get from the shocks. If the springs now have free play, you can wind the screw adjusters up until the springs are under a little bit of compression. If the springs are already under tension at full droop then there is not a lot you can do.
