does any one know the sequence to setting the tappets on the old v6 lump its a k plate 2.9 auto dater says it has hydrolic tappets if it has a cat ????? but she is a rattler any help would be cool
turn the engine over slowly and watch for a pair of valve to go on the rock (one closes as another one opens) on one cylinder, then look at the other bank 2 cyls will have a valve open, the other with the valves shut is the pair you adjust.
If you do have hydraulic tappets then this is what I pulled from another site a while back (passionford.com?)
******
Valves overlapping --------------------Valves to adjust
No 5 cylinder ---------------------------No 1 cyl (in & ex)
No 3 cylinder ---------------------------No 4 cyl (in & ex)
No 6 cylinder ---------------------------No 2 cyl (in & ex)
No 1 cylinder ---------------------------No 5 cyl (in & ex)
No 4 cylinder ---------------------------No 3 cyl (in & ex)
No 2 cylinder ---------------------------No 6 cyl (in & ex)
With the engine in the correct position for the pair of valves to be adjusted, back off the adjusting screw until a large gap is obtained. Now screw it
back in until the gap is just "0" without depressing the tappet. Finally turn the screw in one and a half turns, this will compress the
tappet by about 2mm into its working position.Repeat the process, rotating the engine to its new position each time to get the next pair of valves
"rocking".
On initial start up the tappets may "tap" for a few seconds until the hydraulics settle into the new position.

I have solid tappets on my 2.9 V6 so the above wasn't relevant.

Hydraulic tappets are, well, hydraulic and non adjustable.
i jed yer i understand your version i found this american version
2.9L V6 Valve Lash Adjustment
Remove spark plugs to allow easy turning of crankshaft To adjust both valves for each cylinder do cylinders one at a time in firing order. If the
crankshaft did not move and is at Top Dead Center at #1 cylinder timing mark, adjust intake and exhaust valves of # one cylinder 1 ½ or1 3/4 turns
tighter after 0 lash (no gap between rocker arm and end of valve) is achieved.
Use a ¾" socket on crank, turn crank clockwise only (because you can jump the timing chain if you turn the crank the opposite way), until
cylinder #4 intake valve (next cylinder In firing order), is a smidgen past closing. Adjust intake and exhaust valves at this time the same way as
previously
I like using a "T Handle" on rocker arm nut to keep track of revolutions easier
Continue through firing order 1,4,2,5,3,6, until you did all 6 cylinders
Set engine crank at Top Dead Center at #1 cylinder timing mark
Install and torque sparkplugs
oh and yes hydrolic are non adjustable but these are so i guess we learnt something new

the 2.9 V6 with a cat is covered in the haynes granada (85-94) book - it has hydraulic tappets
no adjustment once its running, but it does need setup right in the first place
(I'm assuming its running on the right oil at the moment.... )
if you can wait till the weekend I'll send you what I've got

i have just got in from the workshop i stripped all the valve gear then cleaned and re fitted and set the tappets as said above painted scabby valve
covers and new genuine ford cork gaskets new filter and plugs fired her over and it sounded as if i had forgoten to put the sparkplugs in so im
guessing the hydrolic tappets are only set able once or they are fooked
i removed the covers befor the selant set and ill re do it but with valve clearences .35 and .40
i was thinking it dosent have to be the original engine it could be a older lump with solid tappets but have the lamaber sensors and something else
i noticed was it dosent have the twin air flow meaters it just has a map sensor and a lamber in each down pipe !!
