Which Fuel Filter ?
mcerd1 - 8/2/18 at 11:32 AM

Can anyone recommend me a fuel filter to use with my bike pump & carbs - something with 3/8" tails would be best (so as to match the pipe sizes on the carb's / pump)

I've got one of these to use as a pre-pump filter:
https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/sytec-10mm-in-line-fuel-filter-ff-inl-6

its got a ~50 micron filter in it and I'm thinking a paper element (~10 micron) one would be preferable between the pump and carb's (I assume that won't have any adverse effects)
but I don't fancy buying something as expencive as one of these
https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/sytec-bullet-fuel-filter-with-10mm-tails-inj-filt-a3

so any suggestions - something cheaper from an OE application would be nice

What do the bike manufacturers fit?

A service item like that surely shouldn't be too expensive.

I ran a similar prefilter on an old GSX1100, carbed bikes don't normally run 2 filters, EFI is a different story.

I ran a plastic/paper filter, about £5, pre carbs with a standard bike filter pre pump.

Yeah, I've been looking for ones like that but can't find any with more than an 8mm tail

I've tried using 8mm hose on the pump and carb tails but its just not a good fit with the hose I can get hold of and is likely to just damage the hoes (the OE bike hose is a lot thinner and seems to have been stretched over the bigger tails)

if anything I know the 50 micron glass one before the pump is overkill, but thats the easy & cheap bit to sort out....

Hi,

I have used a glass cleanable one very similar to you 'pre-pump' filter.

Plenty on the bay with different size fittings that might suit you and not very expensive.

Hope this helps.

Len.

The black to red connector is a 10mm to 8mm reducer

I have consider that, but I'd rather have the minimum number of joints in the fuel line if I can help it

Ideally I'd be looking for a paper element one though - one I can easily get new elements for...

The great idea of the glass filter with a cleanable element is that you do not need to get new ones.
