Engine choice - sprint and hillclimb Fury

Hi all.

My ex RGB Fury is going to have a bit of a winter rebuild (by somebody with more time than me!).

It's currently 'running' a 919 blade engine but I'm looking to upgrade to something a bit more competitive as the car will be used for sprints and hillclimbs (not road going).

As it'll be stripped back to the chassis and some welding work done, I don't mind going to a car engine / gearbox with revised tunnel etc..

So, I'm looking for suggestions bearing in mind the class limits - 1400cc, 1800 (or 2 litre depending on where I go) and over. Turbo / superchargers have a multiplying factor of 1.4.

My budget is flexible and can grow to fit if necessary (my wife can't see this!)

I have a decent Honda K20A engine here (EP3) and thought about fitting this mated to an RX8 box (there's a local ish guy making adaptor plates). They are tall though!

The 1.0 litre Ecoboost engine looks tiny but producing reasonable power although it's a complicated setup and maybe ditching the direct injection would be the way to go.

Any thoughts?

I think for your intended use it'd have to be another bike engine prob one of the newer cbr1000 engines?

Most of the Bike engines used in sprints/hillclimbs are GSX1000 or Busa with the odd R1. Very rare to see anything else. I'd stick to something bike based, probable a Gen2 Busa. Car engine is great but the RX8 gearbox isn't going to be as quick as a Bike engine sequential.

Hi

Assuming you're going to run this in Modified Specialist Production then as you note the class spilt is either 1800 or 2000 or none existent and you're all lumped in together.

I'd therefore suggest either a Big bike engine (so a Busa..) so you drop into the up-to 1800's or a significantly bigger car engine.

The charged 1.0 ecoboost would still leave you up against the big bikes engines, so a small capacity charged engine is tricky, not many people have made that route work and doing something unique often ends up as expensive..

If you went for the Over 1800 option, then what you have lying around wouldn't be a bad start?
There's loads of option to tune it (or charge it..) as you and the car develop.

Stick a titan, or similar, dry sump on it should fix the height and any oil surge issues in one go and it'll be a good platform to build upon as you and the car develop (and should help it be bullet proof reliable..)

Having run both engine types (ZX10R in the single seater and a 4AGE in my striker) if I was in your shoes and going to make that choice it'd be the car based engine and transmission all day everyday - simple, strong and reliable.
I'd invest a bit of money on making sure the installation ticked those last 3 box's though..

I've also got an ex-RGB Fury that's used for Sprints and I'm currently mid-way through converting from a CBR1000RR to Ecoboost 1.6 with a sequential box. If you need to know anything or want a chat to discuss this route then by all means get in touch

Much appreciated! I'm working out some figures on a K20 (Honda Type R ) install although the dry sump does bump the price up!

Forget the K20 Honda. Far too heavy and just doesn't produce the results on track. We have had 3 or 4 compete now in the sports specials and non have given the performance promised. The 240 - 270 Hp is there but they just don't go. The AB Typhon was built, and was appalling in comparison to a basic Zetec and the Duratec's left it standing.

Stick with the BEC concept for sprinting. The key is to have easily changeable gearing for single lap on track to the Hills but that's a struggle without chain driven rear.

Hi

When I said 1.8 K Series, I meant Rover Group as found in Lotus Elise, Caterham, MGTF VVC plus assorted Rovers etc. Also available in 1.4 flavour if suits capacity split in class. Interesting that Honda K20 has not cut the mustard as well as how good Zetecs still are.

Probably stick with BEC, but K series could be fun and might suit the car with some torque, particularly if you want to go road going/on road use although you say you want something more competitive and less roadgoing.

If hoping to be more competitive, what cars are winning? Can a Fury win in the category?

Hi Wyn.

Based on what I saw when James Robertson was testing his 2017 GSXR1000 engined Striker at Llandow one day I was there, I’d be looking in that direction.

In-built full throttle upshifts and allegedly something like 200-odd BHP with his Simpson exhaust. I’m trying to recall what he said it was geared for - I want to say 122mph - and he was on the limiter at the end of both straights. Okay, he was running very sticky Pirelli slicks that meant he was flat in the corners as he came onto the straights but I was at 106mph at the same points (geared for 136mph.)

It was very impressive to see and hear.

Just to say, mine is the car Tim mentions above (thanks very much for the kind words Tim).

It is actually a 2017 ZX10R engine but other than that what Tim says is pretty much bang on, the car is geared for 121Mph at the limiter in 6th.

I tend to do a mixture of hills an sprints but mainly hills. Unfortunately I've not had much chance to run since changing to the ZX10 over an old R1.

If I were starting from scratch and choosing an engine to be competitive at hills and sprints now I think I'd probably choose either a 1600 busa, a supercharged busa, or a heavily breathed on duratec as those will be what you are competing against at the top end of the Mod Prod class. My main reason for choosing the ZX10 was that it would be easy for me to pull out and put into an 1100 single seater in future.
