Camshaft oil seals, sealant?

Hi guys,

On the silvertop Zetec, do you put sealant an the front camshaft oil seals? Haynes Manual mentions it but doesn't seem correct to me? I would have thought to torque down all the camshaft bearing caps then insert the oil seals with tool at the end?

Shouldn't need any sealant on the seals. Infact a bit of oil/grease around it will help it slide in. Smear of grease on the sealing surface is good practice as well. The end caps can benefit from a smear of sealant on the outer edge but be careful it's only a smear on the outer, edge in line with the seal and not near the bearing or oil ways.

Its advised to put a tiny tiny spot between the corners of the cap and the head on the front two ( one piece on an st )

You can get a weep between otherwise.

You don't want to glue the seals in with it

Less is more....
