New MK Indy r owner, question about seats...

Hi guys,

Picked up a very nice mk Indy r today.

The seats are the mk fibre glass bucket seats. No issue with the seats themselves, however, although they are on the adjustable rails, they aren’t quite forward enough for my liking, even at the most forward position.

Can the seat rails be placed further forward? I’m surprised at how little they actually move forward and back.

I could do with being about 4 inches nearer the pedals and steering wheel.

Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Check that the runners aren't being jammed. You can move the runners forward, if you have the skills and confidence to do it
I can give you a hand if you are near Chesterfield?

Cushion could work, but it’s not ideal!

Thought about a kart seat insert? You know the ones that are padded and sit in the bucket seat. I’m just not sure how well it will fit!

@40inches, I don’t think they are getting jammed, both passenger and driver side do slide, but the amount they slide is quite limited...

But it is possible to reposition?

Whilst I’m here, any ideas on steering rake adjustment? Would also like the wheel a bit lower, but unsure if it can be adjusted?

For the seat, you should be able to unbolt the seat and runners from the floor, then drill some new holes 4-6" further forward and remount. All fairly simple if you have some tools/drill etc.

For the steering column it will depend how it's mounted, I have an adjustable sierra column so can move it a little bit but it's restricted by the chassis rails
and position of the steering bush mounts. Take the scuttle off to have a good look at your mounting points.

With these cars it's very useful to have the tools and confidence to be able to take bits off, like seats, scuttle etc.

Why do they call Port Harcourt "The Garden City"?...... Becauase they can't spell Stramash.

Zesty, moving the seat/rails forward should be simple enough unless the cross rail of the chassis gets in the way. Altering the column angle/height is slightly more difficult but achievable. Where are you? Someone else might be nearby and able to take a look and advise.

Thanks guys, very helpful info!

I’m in Colchester, north Essex.

I believe it is a Sierra steering setup. There is a lot to learn!

Sounds very achievable for me to move the seats though.

I’ll put some pictures up of the steering etc soon.

Edit, is it not possible to upload pics from iPhone straight into this thread?

I work on buses and repair drivers seats
Some times people put hex bolts in the runners to bolt them in position this can cause the seats to jam on the bolts heads
So check for this the bolts should be round head Alan type

I’ll have a look, off out soon to a BBQ for a friends b-day.

I don’t believe they are catching, as they do slide, I just think they are quite short runners.

I did this when I first fitted the runners, replaced the hex head with socket head and changed 3"movement to 6"

Looks like you have an adjustable column with the lever missing, slacken the bolt with a spanner and I think you could adjust the height by around 2"

Thanks, it certainly looks that way!

And ok to cut that plastic/carbon surround?

Looks like that plastic is just to stop the carbon either side of the slot from flapping about. Just check thats all it does and if so remove. You could reinforce with a flat strap across the bottom if it's flappy or if you adjust the column too low to allow a flat strap, make one you a U bend.

I think that’s the option I’ll take!

Been out all day, so will take a good look tomorrow.

Appreciate the help guys.

All sorted guys.

Took away the bit of aluminium below the steering column, slackened off the steering wheel adjustment and lowered the wheel.

Also, having had the car out the garage and more room to actaully tinker, I managed to bring the seat further forward on the rails. Just needed a bit of a shove forward. Had more play in it than I realised!

Driving position is now great! Apart from the handbrake being slightly in the way of my left elbow at times!

Yep all sorted, driving position now good!

Just the handbrake that’s in the way a bit! Left elbow knocks it sometimes.

I adjusted the handbrake mounting to tip the lever down at the front, leaving just enough space to get my hand around.
Easily done with spacers (washers)
If you cut a slot in the front mount, you can fix the front bracket under the mounting plate.

I had the same issue with the handbrake lever/left elbow in my MK Indy. If building another car I'd probably try end engineer a different location for the handbrake lever to overcome this. Having said that it did remond me to keep my both hands on the steering wheel.

It makes me appreciate my tin top's electric parking brake even more - just a button and no lever at all

Given you're only about 15mins from MK, why don't you just pop in there and we'll have a look for you. Make an appointment and we'll make a cuppa for you.
