Cutting 22mm Mild Steel Bar Lengthwise
Hi,
I need two 200mm lengths of 22mm diameter 1/2 round steel which wants to be as close to a full semi-circle as possible.
Most stockists sell the flattened 1/2 round section used for handrails but I can't use that.
I only have hand tools so am considering cutting a piece of 22mm bar lengthwise to create two half round sections. I don't really fancy
hacksawing it so am thinking of trying to cut it with an angle grinder fitted with a 0.8mm cutting disk but suspect it will be very difficult to make
a straight cut.
I appreciate it could be milled but paying an engineering shop to do so wouldn't really be viable.
Any advice / experience of doing this?
John.

How about something like this;

Here it's used to cut a tile at a specific height, but there's no reason why you couldn't do the same for a clamped down piece of
metal? I'd go for maybe a 250mm length, bolted either end then you can cut it to length once the deed is done?

Honestly I can't think of anything that is accurate and half way sane. And it's probably cheaper to get someone to flat it, for a local
machinist it'll be probably less than the cost of the material to do the job. You can buy half-rounds but not at 22mm, only 20, 25 and 30 IIRC.

For what you're doing/making, does it have to be half Ø22mm?
Could you get away with Ø20mm or Ø25mm?
Could you use Ø20mm and form a skin of something around that to make it Ø22mm?
(Just trying to move around the issue)

Or could you get half round at a larger size and then have it turned in a lathe down to 22mm. Do an inch at a time and have a collar to keep the thing
from flapping around and held together at the tail.
Can we ask what it's for as knowing the application may give an alternative idea

Could it be tube instead of bar?
22mm tube, 11mm right angle tested against it and draw a line. You now have a perfectly straight guide line. Work out the opposite side and draw
another line.
Now cut the lines. Should be more accurate than trying to do a cut all the way through.

Could you use (if it's available) half round tube (like gutter) ?
Also (out of curiosity) what are you wanting to make ?
If you can share the goal people might have more solutions.

Actually they are to make the "side irons" which mount the folding windscreen an an Austin Seven Ulster.
Although my car is not original I am trying to make it look as correct as possible.
At the moment I'm thinking I could probably use 26mm section (which appears to be available) and file the sharp edges to a radius thus slightly
reducing the width to be nearer to what would be correct.
The sketch below (not drawn by me) shows what the original section was:

Half round steel
Steel in half round form is readily available.
As a starter look at this website

We already pointed that out, but it's only readily available in the wrong dimensions

Does it have to be steel?
Could you get away with brass or another metal / alloy if available in the right size?

Does you have an engineering workshop nearby who might be able to roll something out for you?

At 200mm long I would get my hacksaw out you would cut it in a few minutes
Or cut tube and fill with Liquid Metal
