Pinto thermostats
The std one is 88deg, is there a lower one available? Or should I just drill a bypass hole in the normal one?

Why would you want to run the engine cooler? You'll make less power.
Are you a Mac user or a retard?

I was led to believe the opposite was true and that the optimum thermostat for a tuned pinto was the 82 deg - this from my local friendly engineer
who worked on my engine which produces over 180 BHP

"That thing you're thinking - it wont be that."

And will probably also suffer with hotspots around the back of the head.
I would get one fitted (or a blanking plate) as this is known to cause problems with the Pinto.
Summer's here!!!!

Bingo Hence my question. Burtons do sell them yes, but I was windering if the thermostat from another vehicle fits? If so it will save me sticking
another order into burtons...

To answer my own question, the fiesta Mk 4 1.25litre stat is an 82deg and fits the pinto housing.

Why does the thermostat affect performance (once the engine is up to temperature ) ?
I thought cooling systems were pressurised to allow water temperature to be above 100 deg C, this allowing the engine to operate more efficiently.
I thought the thermostat was to restrict flow of coolant through the radiator until it reaches a reasonable temperature, thus speeding warm up and
reducing engine wear.
Edited after reflection
I suppose the pressurisation is to give a greater margin of safety before coolant boils - doesn't mean the engine is running at over 100 dec
C
But then, any time temperature is normal and you incautiously take the cap off, the coolant boils so it must be at 100 deg.
even more confused now
