trackday and noise limit!!!
les - 30/1/08 at 05:59 PM

hi, I have a trackday booked at brands hatch
(msv novice day) on 15th feb.
Im a bit concerned about the noise from the avon.
It has a standard tiger exhaust, 2L zetec
running on bike carbs- everything else is standard, limit for the day is 105db

anyone know if its likely to be a problem?

You may have to check the sound regs at brands. I had a look a while back but cant remember what they were

If you're concerned, perhaps buy a sound level meter for yourself, they're not too expensive.

The one I bought from Maplin was on special offer at only £34.99. It has since gone up to full price...

Maplin Sound Meter

Same thing on eBay for cheaper...

Same as Maplin on eBay

or cheaper alternative...

Cheap as chips analogue version

I know the idea is 'low cost' but sometimes you know it makes sense. Gave me peace of mind when setting up prior to trackdays.

Best regards

Had a test on my ST 2.1 litre Vaux last year to get ready for a track and it read 106 DB at 4500 rpm which is a lot less than the 3/4 max rpm ( 8500 ) and thats with a 6" repackable. That would be too high for most circuits. How would you get on with with the meters you can buy as they all have a +/- up to 2.5 DB ??

The Great Fandango - 30/1/08 at 08:10 PM

In the defence of the cheap version it's plus or minus two decibels at 114db.

114db is F$£KING loud

The unit is likely to be more accurate at lower amplitudes.

NB: The maplin unit that I own is the same as the unit javelin were using last year.

None of these meters is that accurate the ebay one is identical to the one used at my SVA station!

Hi you may be quite close to the 105db. It would be worth trying to get it checked beforehand if possible.

Locost race cars may well be only 98db. But your average westfield ect with a zetec is around the 102-103 mark Satic at 3/4. This will however increase if they are checking driveby on circuit.

Cheers Matt
