adding a turbo to my BEC
gaz_gaz - 6/7/11 at 08:10 PM

i've looked at other engines etc but have decided that for me a turbo is the way forward,

just wondering if any of the guys currently running turbos on there blade, r1, zx10, zx12 engines etc have pictures of the manifolds and airbox i can use as inspiration?

Also what turbo did you guys go with?

and when is it making full boost?

Check out the tread by LBMEFM I think it has some got links on it.
Its something im going to be doing in the future as well.
Cheers Dan

take a look in the mnr section for maximill666 in his post mnr R1 turbo with progressive nitrous
if that doesn't impress you nothing will

Here's my turbo ZX10R Mac Worx build thread if you're interested, plenty of photos and info in there, hoping to have it on the road very soon

Not one on your list of engines, but oldskool gsxr1100.

td04-16T (from a Volvo T5R), should be good for 250bhp (as in stock install).

plenum from Nissan Pulsar GTiR (£25 great bargain from www.gti-r-us.co.uk who have more)

DIY manifold (although I am no welder)

+ve pressure from 3000rpm. Presently 5psi wastgate, getting 133kPa at 5500RPM

Matt

thanks for the info guys.

that mnr turbo with nos looks insane,

very nice project with the mac turbo too,

Matt, how do you get on with the internal wastegate? can you control the boost or do you get any creep?
it looks like your not using an intercooler unless i'm blind? how are your intake temps?

looks like a nice setup too, how are the clutches coping?

Give Andy Bates a ring at AB Performance. He will be able to answer any questions you may have and more.

Internal wastegate is fine. With the original exhaust it was creeping (2.75inch downpipe into 2.5inch silencer), but I put a dB killer in the end of the exhaust and its now under control. At some point I need to port the wastegate slightly but its fine.
Without intercooler (I was running that way well spotted) I got intakes of 65deg at 6psi, now have an intercooler (£70 e-bay) and it is pretty much at ambient.

Clutch is fine at the moment. I have installed a boost controlled (easy with megasquirt) so don't know how the clutch will last once I turn things up a bit. Not sure of the history of the clutch as the engine is ex-racing sidecar, so it may be beefed up slightly. The gsxr1100 engines are often boosted so its a tried and tested route.

Turbo blade for me, completely standard engine with the exception of the lockup clutch and oil cooler
201 BHP at 7PSI, variable vane turbo all self contained so no oil pipes or cooling to worry about made by aerodyne.

Hangs out the side.

gaz_gaz - 7/7/11 at 06:02 PM

how does the self containred turbo work, i'm guessing its filled with oil and you have to give it oil changes?

also why have you pushed the turbo forward?

looks hardcore strapped onto the side though and makes the exhaust system pretty "straight" forward

mark chandler - 15/7/11 at 08:27 PM

Self lubricated, its own bath of oil.

Its far forward as I wanted a better flow on the pipes and to keep it a little higher.

The master plan was to make like this, once proven make a better system with some 1.5" stainless bends with equal lengths, but it makes the power so will stay as is for now

I had my ZX10R turbo Mac#1 on the rolling road at BigCC yesterday, it needs further mapping today to finish but at 8psi it produced 246.5bhp at the rear wheels, full boost reached at around 6500rpm, positive boost from around 5500rpm. At 12psi it seen 284bhp at the rear wheels.

Here's a little vid, sorry for the poor quality, i'll sort it when i get home.

So after a few months dealing with new house. new job I find myself with time for the car again.

Can anyone recommend me someone to make a manifold, plenum and exhaust?I'm now near reading but traveling for a proper job isn't an issue.

Thanks Gary

If I want to turbo my 5jj r1 (carb'd) Can I retain the carbs within a pressurized airbox?
How about a rising rate fuel regulator?

gaz_gaz - 6/1/13 at 09:02 AM

As if by chance I find myself back at this thread a year to the day later.

Can anyone recommend someone to fabricate the required parts for adding a turbo?

I've contacted a few people who agree to the job then dont answer phones or provide me with a price for the work.

Thanks

that bike-turbo site has been down for a while.

Doug also goes by the name of "disco doug"on the oldskoolsuzuki.info site (also down at the moment!). He gets good reports.

big CC are based in Reading and are one of the larger UK names in turbo bikes. They come with a good reputation but are probably not that locost. http://www.bigccracing.com/

Welderman. You have a message coming your way.

Thanks Matt. I'll take a look.

Proby - 6/1/13 at 10:37 AM

I've been struggling too to finds someone to fab me a plenum & exhaust manifold. I had someone phone me yesterday asking about producing some advertising graphics, he happens to be an aluminium & stainless fabricator who does a lot of motorsport fabrication. So think I'm finally sorted, (fingers crossed!).
