Rubbing pads
MadMaxx - 9/6/14 at 06:05 AM

I replace the TWR pads of the front HiSpec breaks of my Fury with Mintex 1144 with antirattle shims. Both external pads are rubbing on the disk due to an offset of 1 mm of the calipers. Which solution do you suggest?

do you mean that the caliper is not centred on the disc ?

if this is the case you'll need to shim the caliper mounting to bring it into the centre - or if it needs to go the other way you'll need to remove a little material from the mountings

Yes, the calipers are not centred, but I didn't see before becaused when I bought the car the old pads were one third worn. Now the disk is blocked due to the pressure of the external pad. Will be safe put an alu shim of 1 mm? I would prefer to avoid to remove material from pads. Once the pads will be worn a little bit I could remove the shim.

single piece shim's (i.e. not lots of thin layers) should be perfectly safe as long as your bolts are long enough

this is the method used to setup most radial mount calipers etc..

mine are 5mm think
(with 5mm longer bolts of the correct grade)

if your in any doubt then post some pictures of the problem and we may be able to help you more

I would not use ali, too soft (most seems to be) I would use a decent washer, ideally hardened, you don't want any chance of deformation...

Commercial washers have a thickness of 2 mm and I need only 1 mm.

get them laser cut, that's what I would do, or make them from suitable sheet

search for 'shim washers' you should be able to get 1mm ones quite easily

what diameter is the bolt ?

or failing that cut them out of a suitable sheet of steel as above (you don't need to laser cut them)

Make a single two hole shim out of sheet. Steel easier to position than washers.

I ask a friend of mine to reduce to 1mm the thickness of a standard washer of 2 mm with a plan grinder to finally find out that a washer of 2 mm was the right one to do the job. Thanks for all the suggestions received.
