Autosolo .......anyone?
pewe - 19/5/10 at 05:30 PM

Just wanted to know if anyone takes part in these?
Any feed-back appreciated.
Strikes me that they represent good value for money and since it's against the clock you can gauge how quick/slow you are.
Looking at local car clubs regs seem as if I'll be up against 3.5ltr cars - but given the F27 is very chuckable and the power comes in low down that might not be a bad thing.
Cheers, Pewe

Yep, done quite a few. Great fun, really cheap, virtually zero risk and a good atmosphere to boot.

I would have thought your car would be more suitable as a sprint car rather than autotest/solo, don't most of those guys use Minis

dhutch - 19/5/10 at 05:50 PM

Ive started doing a bit recently with loughborough car club. Infact i was at one of their grasstrack autotest events last night.
- You can use any car really at club level, particularly in autosolos. Although clearly the competitive its gets the more you find short wheelbase fwd car's with plenty of lock are the most competitive. Nova'/106's/mini's etc. Loose all the weight out of it you can, disable the handbrake ratchet and fit a ball onto the wheel.

How much do autotest/solos cost?

Strontium Dog - 19/5/10 at 06:06 PM

Autosolos are different to autotests. Autotsolos you get to go much faster, a bit like a sprint with obstacles thrown in. You don't need reverse either! Autotests is mostly 1st and reverse like doing doughnuts and J turns in a field or big car park with no risk of getting nicked!

I know someone that wrote a Mini off last year during a tarmac autotest due to a lamp post "jumping out at him". Another of my mates runs a GT4 celica in Autosolo and I even autotested a 2.8tdi shogun a couple of years ago when our car of choice threw it's brakes the day of the test!

All in all both are awesome good fun and cost very little. Beware of tarmac autotests though for tyres, gearbox's clutch's etc as they all get a real beating!

Usually about £15 to join the club for a year and then £15 per autotest. No special license or insurance needed!

Yes, the LoCC events are £15. £20 to join, including your first event.

Er! Have a guess! (I can't even win in my Mini)

My mate had to compete in it too so we just ran against each other really, put it in rwd and off we went. It was a grass test and we probably had more fun than anyone else there. We shall be remembered for that one too as it provided some amusement!

It's worth mentioning that these events are marshalled by volunteers who give up there time so we can play. If you get into doing a few it is good to do a bit of marshalling. This can also lead into marshalling at other events like 12 car rally, hill climbs, sprints and rally stages etc. too so can be quite good fun as well.

Worth mentioning ALL motorsports events (even the Grand Prix) are marshalled by volunteers and a big round of applause to all of them, without them we'd we wouldn't be doing any events

At the PPC mallory event, for which LoCC hosted the autotest (very simple tarmac course) one lady look a swb transit round and got some very respectable times. Although she was one of the few who had any previous experience having done a autosolo series in a more typical car.

Now that sounds like my kinda woman. You don't have her no. by any chance

fha772 - 19/5/10 at 07:18 PM

I saw that!!

She even thrashed it round the track on a couple of sessions!!

It was a laugh, seeing the Transit overtaking some hatchbacks on the hairpin!!

Yeah indeed.
- There was a good margin in the final average score but her fastest time in the transit factionally beat my slowest run the westfeild and with a simluar time to a astra van was all over the VX200 that went round and the the other westfeild.

I have done one autosolo so far this year and looking at doing another this coming Sunday, much fun, I am crap at it but still.

Membership is £7 per year £12 for family membership, events are generally about £25.

Different cars can fall into classes so as such cars tend to be similar but at the end of the day I have watch a guy in a diesel Peugeot estate wipe the floor with many a competitor in what ever car.

I joined Accrington club as it is local and for information the regs as such are here: http://www.anwcc.org/regs-100523-solo.pdf

What tends to happen with this club is the competitors are split into three groups, one group competes, one group mashalls and one group takes a rest, then it swaps around.
I was second to last at the end of the day!

Just wondering if Daniel dhutch will be there on Sunday reading this post.

Cheers! Managed with a lot of group project work, coursework, and a suitable double credit modual, to get away with only one 3hour exam in IC Engines to finish it all off. Which feels a bit weird, but thats the on first of june, with my last other major assessment being on tuesday of next week in the form of out Mechatronics project final presentation and demonstration.

Most Solos are a little too open to need one, (allthough the DDMC one i did in the clio was very tight, hence the copious use of the handbrake!).
Some people do use them but the bonus with the Nova was its power/weight meant it could do anything in 2nd gear so I could keep both hands on the wheel as most Solos dont need handbrakes.
