PPC Magazines £999 Challenge. 16th September.
owelly - 5/7/11 at 10:47 PM

Just a quick heads-up for the titled event!
Its on Friday the 16th of Septmber at Santa Pod.
Details are here...: http://www.ppcmag.co.uk/999-challenge.html
and lots of jibbering on the forum, here....: http://www.ppcmag.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=41

Most of you know the format. Buy and/or buld a car for under £1k and go as fast as you can. The car should have a current MOT on 16th of September (although this has never been checked!) and you must be able to proove it stands you at less than £1k (which has also never been checked!).

It's a very laid back challenge as you can imagine and the last event at Santa Pod ended up with everyone having as many runs up the drag strip as they wanted. As my car popped within the first 20 minutes, I got to drive everyone elses cars instead! Once everyone tired of driving fast in a straight line, they set up the handling course. This was a bundle of cones and suprisingly, you had as many goes as you wanted. The fastest times of the drag and handling course were added together to give the winners.

So that's the general idea. However.......
Many of the guys who have turned-up at these £999s have gone out a couple of days before the event and bought whatever they could with whatever they had in their pockets. These guys had just as much fun as the 'magic calculator guys' who were there to win. And you could share a ride to share costs. You'll still have to pay £50 each driver but the car can be used, abused and resold if it survives. And £50 for the amount of drag miles you get is pretty good value, if drag strips are your thing.

You'll need to be entering pretty soon and if enough folks mention my name when enquiring, I may get to play without having to pay!!

And don't forget, you can't come last no matter how crap you are because I'll be there too.

Cheers, Owelly.

i really think they should make the rules on this tha same as the banger cup events. price cap is £1000 but to make sure you keep to it at the end of any event if someone offers you £1000 for it you have to sell it! this makes sure people dont overspend

This has been discussed and the guy at the very first £999 stood by what he'd said when he was first challenged about his Nissan Pulsar GTi costing over £1k. He sold his car to the guy who owns York Raceway for £999. He'd already posted a blog detailing how much he paid for the car, what he'd sold off it to buy bits to rebuild the engine (which was knocking and the reason the car was cheap) He'd posted up all the ebay listings to prove his calculations but he was happy to put his money where his mouth was. I wouldn't have been so generous as the car as it was on race day was worth far more than the £998 he'd spent on it. Froggy won the second event in his Kitten. I quick walk around the car soon totted-up more than £1k in parts if you had to buy them all but if it's stuff he had laying around his workshop trying to put a value on it all would take forever. And he certainly wouldn't sell it for £1k.
In a similar way, my Magenta is still way under £1k and it looks it too but I wouldn't sell it for £1k. It's a car I've owned for many years and has sentimental value.
If we're being totally honest, we can't really check the value of all the cars entered. Some are blatently over budget but it makes it funnier when one bought off ebay, live on PPCMAG.co.uk/forum, for £200 gives the daft arses a swift spanking. It's happened several times and it will happen again.
The rules stipulated that all cars must have a current MOT and be road legal. Those rules were tweaked to allow cars to enter that didn't have insurance and/or tax. Even then, many of the cars had no MOT and were far from road legal. Some had slicks, panels missing, lights removed etc. If any of these cars had won, then there is every chance they would have been disqualified. As it was, they didn't win but it made for some good competition.

I'm suprised there hasn't been more interest from the LCBers as it's a fun day out thats definately locost! Even if its just to do a few drag runs on a track car, it's still worth the money!
The camping the night before is enough to warrent the drive south for me!!
Cheers folks. Owelly.

I've just seen this on Pistonheads.

Might blow up after a few runs because of the "knocking" in the engine, but if you strip the interior and anything that's not necessary it would probably be good for cheap 1/4 miles. It leaves a little cash for some kind of upgrade as well.

What kind of times do people get with these cheap cars? And what kind of cheap cars to people get these times with?

I just got a quote on the Impreza with confused.com. All I can say is "lol". Cheapest was £4,500 for Third Party Only. After that the next one was £5,900.

I'll stick to my Fury, I think.
