Change of username
yellowcab - 26/6/12 at 06:47 PM

Sent Chris W a few messages to no avail, does anyone else know someone capable of changing my username.

Very straight forward job for someone with the correct permissions.

Thanks

I know two users who have changed their name!

As a contributor who has contributed Great British Pounds to help support this forum, I'd be mortified if no one with admin permission can click 'Change Username' with their mouse on their PC, within the admin settings.

Does a username matter that much?

Once your a regular, people know you by you username/avatar so changing it seems odd...!

Didn't realise I needed justification, lol

Keeps all your history though as well as registered date and number of posts. Oh and not having to upload all your photos.

You'll often find that usernames are linked to unique numerical ID's in most forums but I don't believe they are here. A username is just text and therefore changing a text username is very difficult and not worth doing. What most have done is just to reregister for a new account.

I stand to be corrected, but that's how I understand it works here?

All the best

I also knew of a couple people changing their username's but I think it was in the Forum's infancy and is now not done for whatever reason (I am 100 percent NOT technically minded)...

However, I would agree with some of the above that you get known as your forum nickname. People keep calling me Steve for example and my realy name is Cutie McPretty.

If there isnt a use ID beyond the username I can see a change might be more involved.

On our forum (invision powered) we dont allow users to change the name, due to the confusion in can cause, but can and do change them if requested for specific reasons.

I used to maintain another forum (SELOC) that runs the same software as this one. I wrote a custom extension to change a users name, but it was a PITA. Users are uniquely identified by their username, not any sort of numeric ID so to change a name you have to change it everywhere, every post, every u2u, every permission etc. It's not just a matter of an admin clicking a 'Change Username' button.

I used to peruse SELOC when I had my Exige... generally a good forum, but it was ruined (for me) by the ball-bag troll-gang that was on the go in 2005 / 2006.

The bellends got on my tits as well. Far too much knob waving and spiteful vindictivness spoilt it. Large chunks of the code I added was to keep them somewhat restrained, which was a waste really. I was quite pleased with the events management code I wrote though
