I am probably wrong, but wouldn't it then be classified as a news group?

from experience they're little used anymore (IIRC you email a newsgroup to equivalent of posting a message.)

Ned, newsgroups are still extensively used, and in fact are rivalled only by P2P networks for availability of pirate software, copywrite breaching MP3s and pornography........ I can highly recomend them!!!

P.S. Sometimes there's even useful information on them!! Try groups.google.com for the more useful end of the newsgroup spectrum.
