I have shortened my car by 4 inches in the seating area. To gain the leg room back I was planning to extend the drivers foot well.
1. Do you think I need to? (I'm 6ft)
2. If you have, ant pics and advice?
I know Caterham did/do this.
I think I may run into problems with the bellhousng restricting space.

I put the sheet steel on the inside of the tunnel and gained 25mm all the way down. If you look down my foot well you can see the box section, hope this makes sense

You have a very understanding wife!
Madteg has a point though, the further forward you take the footwell the narrower it gets, the standard footwell is a bit tight for my feet.
Whether you need it or not really depends on your leg length, not your total height, I'm over six foot but the back of my seat is about 3 inches
away from the rear bulkhead to get the right driving position, but then I have a long body and short legs for my height.

Being 6ft 3 (and a bit) I had to extend my drivers footwell on my Tiger due to having long legs. I also used standard Sierra pedals which I had cut,
bent backwards and then rewelded. This meant they would travel further once depressed than the tunnel end panel would allow. By extending the end
panel the pedals travel easily into the `extended area`. I basically made an ali box and riveted it on the end of the footwell. Couple of pics

Similar to above really.
In the end of the foot well I cut a hole and made up a box that bolted in.
On the end of the box mounts the M/C's.
The pedals then hinge from the end chassis cross member.

How did you make the trim panels stay in place; just a tight fit, velcro etc?
The type of seat you use makes quite a difference. Fibreglass seats give and extra 4 inches ish of leg room over Cobra Roadstyer seats.
