Footwell width
andyharding - 12/8/04 at 09:03 PM

I'm about to finish my transmission tunnel off and I need to decide the width of the footwell.

It would be preferable to get the engine as far back as possible but I don't think there will be enough room for the pedels if I put the bell housing more than an inch into the tunnel.

Can anyone tell me the width of the inside of their footwell and if there is room to operate the pedels confortably? I suppose I could always miss out the brake pedel...

I'm fitting an 1800 Zetec on twin DCOE 40s and a type 9 box.

Thanks in advance.

I used book dimensions with a type 9, one word of warning, dont set the box too far back, mine coincides with the tunnel uprights and only gives me 5mm clearance either side, 19mm futher forward and I would have 21mm clearance both sides. it is being a real pain to fit the services past the end of the box. Mark

Which UJ did you use that has the same spline shaft for type 9?

Ford Capri, I think all of the mk2&3's will do the job

Thanks for the info.

I think early Sierras have a UJ instead of the rubber thing too.

You're right, it was the first 12,000 made, but there are as rare as hens teeth

Thanks Mark.
Unfortunetly Capris are pretty rare to be found in Portugal (as scrap, I mean)

transit/ldv are sposed to be the same

I know mk2 transits are ok, it was an easier removal job on the capri.!

Andy, I made my footwells narrower at the bottom, and wider at the top. There is plenty of room for the pedals and this has allowed me to mount the gearbox far enough back to not need a gear lever extension. I'm not at home at the mo, so can't measure up but will do later if you need the measurements.

Regards, Ian.
