Help with locost/roadster
Helpneeded1234 - 1/11/14 at 05:17 PM

Hi all, can anyone help me with my problem, Ive just bought a part built car and it came with few parts, the fella I got it from only had it 3 months didn't do anything to it and when I purchased it he wasn't much help telling me about it so here I am. As the car came with some spare wishbones I thought I would start there but came across a problem with the position of the suspension mounting bracket as they don't line up, the car did come with a build your own sports car for 250 but the Picture in the book of the front chassis looks different to the one I've got so I don't know how I'm going to get the position right. I've taken some photos to help but don't know how to upload them. Thank Nick

big_wasa - 1/11/14 at 05:34 PM

Have you uploaded them to photobucket or anything similar ?

Helpneeded1234 - 1/11/14 at 05:36 PM

No not yet but I will have a go now.

Helpneeded1234 - 1/11/14 at 05:45 PM

I've just added them to photobucket now what do I do thanks?

big_wasa - 1/11/14 at 05:57 PM

You just add the direct link to your post.

Non custom - 1/11/14 at 06:02 PM

Copy and paste the link (direct) onto here the link should be to the right of the picture
Or as a link symbol above it

Helpneeded1234 - 1/11/14 at 06:35 PM

http://s1371.photobucket.com/user/Jonick2007/library/ sorry for the delay as have been having problems with copying the link.

coozer - 1/11/14 at 06:41 PM

I would suggest making a new jig, cutting bthevbrackets off and welding new ones in the right place.

Doesn't look like they been put in properly, ie no jig!

coozer - 1/11/14 at 06:44 PM

Helpneeded1234 - 1/11/14 at 06:48 PM

That's what I was thinking but the front end looks different then in the book.

mark chandler - 1/11/14 at 07:06 PM

While you are about it get the steering rack shorterned and beef up the mountings, it will suffer from bad bump steer if you leave as is

nick205 - 1/11/14 at 07:21 PM

Welding on the steering shaft doesn't look too clever! That will need re-doing with a properly sleeved joint.

from the picture above, the welding on the steering column is rubbish, the pinch bolt will not seat in its grove, other welding is poor, and brackets don't line up - would also expect the rack to sit on mountings of some form.

I see from the other pictures that it seems to be a triumph 1300 engine, but the air box is upside down

big_wasa - 1/11/14 at 07:50 PM

As above it needs the brackets re jigging.

They over hang to much, they will crack and fail.

Also above the steering link needs work.

Steering rack mounts need support, I believe yours would fail Iva as it is.

The bottom of the tubes F1 F2 with the bracket that wont line up is in the wrong place.
The steering linkage should sit on the inside of it not the out side.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mbbo7e5p7hmbbup/rack%20mounts%20and%20front%20bone%20mounts.JPG?dl=0

I would strip it down and measure it up and inspect every joint.

Post more pics up

big_wasa - 1/11/14 at 08:01 PM

Is it Triumph based ? as the front uprights don't look like Cortina either ?

Helpneeded1234 - 1/11/14 at 08:11 PM

Well i was told it has a triumph spitfire 1500 engine and cortina parts as in build a car for £250.

I have seen a fair few parts that need welding again. I do like a challenge but it's know where to start😳

Helpneeded1234 - 1/11/14 at 09:15 PM

Thanks for all your replies I will take more photos in the morning, Any more info will help a lot no matter how small as I dont want to be driving something dangerous. And I live near bournemouth if anyone is local They are more then welcome to come take a look, but no laughing thanks again

big_wasa - 1/11/14 at 09:52 PM

They don't look like Cortina as it looks to have top hat adapters and pinch bolts ie as used on a McPherson strut.

Could be sierra ? Would need better photos.

It may explain why you have two lots of wishbones as a sierra based front end has shorter top wishbones.

Helpneeded1234 - 1/11/14 at 09:59 PM

Thanks I'll take a lot more photos tomorrow and upload on photobucket and see what you think.

for the engine, see if you can find an engine no. on triumph blocks its at the back on the distributer side. (just the first 4 chars/digits will tell enough) probably fm10... or similar
a couple of pics of the 'vertical links' (front suspension by the wheels) will also help identify things.

Helpneeded1234 - 1/11/14 at 10:52 PM

Will do, and I'll add them on photobucket thanks nick.

gremlin1234 - 2/11/14 at 12:03 PM

the rtc2459r number is a part number for a recon triumph engine.

is there another number under no.4 sparkplug, (stamped into a 'tab' on the block) ?

coozer - 2/11/14 at 12:08 PM

I'd be getting that panhard rod into double shear there..

I'd also be having a good look at the front end, rack is too long, chassis tubes dont look right, suspension pickups points dont look right, rack mount looks iffy, it and the steering shaft need some beefing up. I'd be tempted to cut the lot off and go back to the book and start again.

I will take a look for the other number later today as I'm out with the wifey at the mo

I think I will start by taking everything off and marking the chassis out on a few sheets on ply
and see if anything lines up, when that's done hopefully I can carry on from the bookwork.

Good idea batman, was going to suggest it but didnt think you would go that far.

Good luck,
Steve

big_wasa - 2/11/14 at 02:49 PM

So front uprights do look like Sierra.

Rear axle is not an English. It is either an atlas axle from a Capri or looking at the width its more likely to be a Koln from a German mk2 escort. I would prefer the atlas but the Koln would be ok with the triumph power.

Any chance of a pic of the diff cover bolts.

My personal opinion is you have a huge list of issues with that project. If you have the time and skill it could be salvageable. I would get it rolling and running and move it on or use it as a donor.

My guess is that's what the last owner did and why he didn't offer two much info.

Helpneeded1234 - 2/11/14 at 03:36 PM

Well unfortunately I'm committed now as the wife won't let me sell to buy another one, but I have got the time to try when it stops raining I'll take a couple more pic.

big_wasa - 2/11/14 at 05:57 PM

Well playing with that still beats watching the soaps with the wife

Do you have the ability to do the welding work ?

Helpneeded1234 - 2/11/14 at 07:12 PM

I'm With you there don't like watching neighbours or one born

I can weld but not as good as my dad and he's keen to help me.

Couple more photos

And I've started to strip it down, will try and take pics as I go.

gremlin1234 - 3/11/14 at 05:09 PM

the new number you found 'tkc1155' is a cylinder head, for spitfire 1500
though it appears too have been modified from a us spec low compression head, tkc3239

Helpneeded1234 - 3/11/14 at 05:55 PM

Do you know if the triumph engines are any good?

gremlin1234 - 4/11/14 at 04:12 PM

the triumph spitfire engines are a very old design, of about 1litre which have been bored and stroked over time to 1500cc,
however this also means they are very simple engines see this vid
http://www.tested.com/tech/45099-stop_motion-video-of-triumph-spitfire-engine-build/
a 1500 should give you about 90bhp, (which is quite enough to enjoy in a light kit.)

the only 'normal' problems that occur:
the crankshaft thrust washers sometimes fall out, - gives 2mm forward back movement on the crank, which then tries to eat its way out.
and the clutch is quite likely to have sized.

Helpneeded1234 - 4/11/14 at 07:57 PM

ill bear that in mind thanks, Looking forward to getting it running.

A couple more pics

Only the axle to go now

alfas - 6/11/14 at 08:31 PM

hmm...thats a difficult project:

generally poor welding, geometry wrong, steering wrong, engine not the best....i would immediately stop doing anything and sell the car in pieces.

considering that you will get a nice ford based locost for 2-3k, where you might only need to sort registration-issues, any money you will invest in this car is for nothing.

whats the pcd of the rear axle? looks like a vauxhall one?

[Edited on 6/11/14 by alfas]

big_wasa - 6/11/14 at 08:51 PM

Axle, Its not a koln but it doesn't look like the Capri Atlas either ? The Capri Atlas doesn't have that breather on top of the tin diff cover and is 4" wider than the escort.

Helpneeded1234 - 6/11/14 at 08:56 PM

Don't know!

alfas - 6/11/14 at 09:13 PM

vauxhall viva as used in sylva leader or star models

Helpneeded1234 - 1/12/14 at 08:29 PM

Hi all,
quick update with the locost, well after a lot of measuring and internet searching found I had the wrong book, armed with the right book I set to work pulling off the wishbone brackets which was way to easy, with a large screwdiver most just peeled off. I bought a jig of the Internet (very helpful) and set to work lining it up.
Brackets now in place with a extra support welded on the back of the bracket to the chassis, the wishbones now fitted just waiting for the new shocks to turn up. I pulled the rest of the car to bits, checking the welds, replacing brackets and General rewelding. Starting to look a bit better.

Steering rack next.

Few pics of the work Iv done

Thanks.
