Mid engine locost

Hi all

I am new to this forum but here goes.

I want to build a kit car using a rover v8. I have already built a Robin Hood and that is on the road so ideally i would like to build something other than a 7-type car.
If i had the money a GT40 would be the next project but i don’t and the engine i have is not ideal for that car! So here are my requirements, if anyone can suggest a kit or design i would be very interested
1 mid engine
2 Two seater
3 With windscreen and possible weather gear
4 In the spirit of a Locost (Not T70 or GT40 costs)
4 Open top (not Lambo etc)
5 Proper handling and p/w ratio
6 Not cobra (nice cars but I’m not grown up enough just yet for one of those)
7 I would like to have a go at the complete job so making the chassis is ok

Well i have just read that and it seems what i am after is a two-seater formula 3000 type car with a windscreen and hood for about 4-5 grand all in, built....

Any ideas?

Cheers

How about an WLR? It's based on an Indy chassis which is basically a Locost with IRS so I see no reason why you couldn't fit the bodywork to a book chassis and keep within your budget.

Fulfills all your requirements apart from the mid engine bit.

Julian,

I'll chime in with Alan and suggest you visit the Mid-Engine forum here.

As well, I'm currently going through the exercise of 'mid-engine-ing' the Locost chassis design. The idea is to come up with a mid-engined car that can be built with the same sort of materials and methods as the book Locost - particularly with regard to bodywork. My avatar image (to the left) shows my original bodywork design intent. The direction I'm going with the current exercise is a much more Locost-like layout; in fact, very similar to the CarCraft Cyclone. See http://www.team.net/www/ktud/jpgz/cyclone1.jpg

for some images of same.

I've just about finished a 1:12 scale model of a 'standard' Locost and I'm part-way through a matching model of the middy for comparison. Once they're done I'll post some images here.

Thanks for the replies all

I am coming to the conclusion that what i am after might be something similar to the new ERA single seater racing clone, but in two seater style. I have been looking for a while at this and it would seem that although there are cars around that fulfil this requirement, non of them can be built on a tight budget.
To that end i guess the only thing left to do is to design and build something that meets my requirements myself. If it can be done in the spirit on Ron Champions original lowcost concept then i think there would be a market for this idea.

When i have some drawings and specs i will post them back here for your valued comments.

Cheers again
