I recently brought a rollbar off Ebay and it's too narrow( I know I should have checked first)
Any ideas on how to straighten out the bends? It's 1 3/4" * 3mm CDS.

Lots of heat I would have thought.
I think on such an important bit of the car it would be a bad idea to try and alter the bends.
What about having a piece profesionaly fitted to the middle.
Steve.
warm it up to a nice even cherry red, all of the bend and an inch or so either side, then just tweak as required, you'll need access to a set of
bottles though.

My solution would be to cut it in half, insert tube of diameter to go snugly inside one half, tube of original diameter over that and butt to original tube( this fillet is cut to the increased width required) and welded, then other original side slipped over the inner tube and welded again. It won't cost a lot, it will take some time and effort, it will be at least as strong as the original, probably more. As it is a roll bar you want it to be strong.
I made mine from an old bed headboard, to gain width I cut a slice out of each curve and welded up.
This is not any good for MSA as the tube has to be a single piece, not that you get any where near MSA spec with a scabby old headboard !

Drat...I thought everybody did that! I find that a snug-fitting rubber band helps, tho....
I've managed to straighten out formed bends a little by using brute force, just put one end under something solid and push. For the little amounts you need you should be ok.
Only one safe way to widen a rollover bar................replace it with an item of the correct dimensions to start with!
How much is your life worth?
Cheers,
Syd.
my thoughts exactly...........wasn't sure whether some of the answers were jokes or not, presume the bed one was having a laugh!!!
Make a new bar and sell the old one
I totally agree, the thought has been sat at the back of my mind all weekend.
Thanks to all, Mark you don't need a CDS replacement bedhead do you

Has anyone actually ever rolled a locost? I've spun mine and done various other stupid stunts but never actually come close to getting more than one wheel off the deck. I fitted one as a handy handle to push with.

One of my son's friends rolled his Caterham... and walked away with only minor bruises due to the full cage.
I was also impressed that Caterham fixed the car afterwards, for not too much money.
David
yup, me too
Take the advice above, source and fit a proper sized replacement.

They are obviously not as good as the real thing I like the way the barrel roll landed back on its wheels.
I like the way he apparently only broke an arm after a cartwheel like that. I expect he probably needed to put his race overalls in for a dry clean
as well
Good advert for a full cage and the strength of a bronze welded chassis.
Hi and people still worry about the extra 14kg of weight high up on thier chassis whith a full cage. You may think it will never happen to you but you
never know whats round the bend.
cheers matt
