Is there any optimal way to position the seam in welded tubing in a spaceframe?
In general terms - No - unless the tube is in bending (which they shouldn't be) then place it in the neutral axis.
But as very few tubes are in bending in a spaceframe put it where it can't be seen for best aesthetics.
Make sure you don't end up with the seam in a face you'll later want to drill for rivets as it can be a bugger to drill through.

Can you post a picture of the box section as ERW should not have a seam and I'm a little confused.
It's the side with the dark line down the middle of it on the tubing I used, very easy to spot. As for aesthetics, you won't see it when it's got a coat of paint over it.

someone once recommended that the seam be put at the bottom to help lower the centre of mass!
I would prefer them at top.
When mister rust is looking for the weekest spot.
But at the end i think: it doesn't make a difference
