I am just creating my list of required steel lengths before phoning around local steel stockholders. I think I would prefer to just go to a stockholder rather than blag offcuts but would like to know a bull park figure for what I would expect to pay for the lengths of square tube steel I will need to create the chassis.

I should say that this did not include the plate (3mm + 1.5mm) or brackets etc.

Just the tube was around £80ish, add in the 3mm plate offcuts took it to over £100. Sheet of 16 swg steel for the floor was another £30.

mine was £210 but all stainless steel, but god it looks nice.

About £230 for box section, floor sheet and w/bone tube in 304 s/s for an IRS chassis.


I'm lucky, in that most of material for w/b brackets, dif mounts, engine mounts, seat belt mounts,
rad, rack, h/brake, g/box, etc, etc, were all made from off cuts from work.
I always keep an eye out behind the saw and the gilly.

It's the bits and bobs that add up if you have to buy them.

The other day I spotted some 1/2" X 16swg s/s tube off cuts about 600mm long.
My eyes lit up as I thought "Ah, cycle wing stays".

I paid about 130 for more than enough tube(had plenty left over to make a new bench with the left over 3mm plate) for the chassis and full sheets of 3mm and 1.5mm then about 45 for two sheets of 1.5mm ally for the body/interior panels

So a definite saving to be made over purchasing a pre-made chassis plus a bit more satisfaction (and knowledge) to be able to say "i made that".

Yes very much so and i think you'll learn more doing it this way as it makes you think what you doing and why rather than "just" bolting bits together.
As long as your prepared to accept you will make mistakes its a hugely satisfying experience.

Ok, and just to check my sums. What amount (in metres) did you order?

Cant remember how much I ordered, a while back now but I did have too get the odd bit more for this and that, I was lucky ordered thru work we bulk buy steel, from memory around £50-£60.

It comes in 6m lengths, my local stockholder expect you to bring a chopsaw/angle grinder and chop it up yourself on site.

So for I've bought 42m of 1" tube and 12m of 3/4" tube. I think I'll have some leftover but not much!
