Ron Champion or Chris Gibbs book
Frankieboy - 6/1/08 at 10:22 AM

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone can give me some advice on which book to follow.

I bourght the Ron Champion book some time ago and he uses a ford escort as a doner car ,as we all know these cars are now very rare now as well as the ford cortina front hub assemblys being hard to source.

I understand that the Chris Gibbs book uses a ford sierra doner car, do you use the front hubs, diff etc?????

Which book is best
Thanks
Frank

hi frank, i think that chris gibbs 'build your own sports car on a budget' is the better one out of the two.

Vote for Chris...

1. Chris is still around to ask
2. Its a more corrected design, as threre are some minor errors in the original book, but thats not a major problem.
3. There is an active forum / site just for Chris's car / book.

Also there is this site regardless of which car you choose.

Basically you are on the right site for info and advice, and Chris's site for the more specific stuff for his design.

You wont go far wrong if you both these two sites.

I have to agree.

The Chris Gibbs book is by far the most up to date.
Very comprhensive & well written.

You have a much more realistic chance of finding a Sirra donor.

I spent over 2 years looking for an Escort Mk 2 donor at a realistic price. One never came along.

Even Sierras are beginning to get thin on the ground. I reckon if you're going for the "original" book then you need to count on paying for alloy uprights etc. Okay you do get some OEM parts coming up on Ebay but they go for such a lot of money (ie for the classic car scene) that buying alloy replacements would be not that much more expensive and make more sense in the long run.

READ BOTH. I found rons book really interesting and says alot about the early locost days, then build from chris' book.

From what I have seen on here you can get enough on the Bay for your Champion book to pay for Gibb's book and the steel for your chassis so the answer is obvious

Getting some practise in early Paul? May 22nd I sold my copy of the second book on here but I haven't invested in a replacement yet. Does Chris get the same royalty wherever you buy the book from, I'm waiting for it to appear in a charity shop near me

Well I bought TWO, so your offspring should at least be in reusable fabric shopping bags, not the deadly plastic variety that develop holes on your way home.

chrisg - 14/1/08 at 07:57 PM

I'll tell them they're from uncle RK

Cheers
