Granada Based MK, Can it be done?

I'm told that the last Granada is based on the same platform as the sierra and was wondering if it would work as a donor for an Indy as I need an auto box which isn't an easy thing to find on a sierra, whilst its slightly easier to find on a granada and cheaper. Also, If I bought a car with a V6, would it be much work to swap it for a pinto (Before putting it in the Indy?

Gearbox input shaft is long on the V6 gearbox so a space will be needed between the bell housing and engine.

Could I not replace or modify the shaft? Hopefully I'll be able to get a 4 pot, though I've seen a couple of Cossie 24v which would kind of cool if it could be shoehorned in.

to use the v6 gearbox input shaft on a pinto requires the end to be shortened by about 10mm iirc, an angle grinder can do that.

However to swap shafts from the pinto to the longer v6 one requires the whole gearbox to be opened and cogs swapped, which is quite a bit of work. As a donor the granada is perfectly usable though the front brakes are quite heavy. Mind that you will need extra room in the tunnel for the autobox which will make the foot wells rather small so a wide body 7 would be best.

The auto box does'nt have an input
shaft as such,it uses a torque converter
to bolt onto the drive plate(flywheel)
I havent heard of anyone doing the
v6 to pinto swap with the granada box
but no doubt someone who has done it
will be along soon.
Can you not find yourself a twincam granada with auto box?

can the Indy fit the larger 7.5" diff or does it have to have a 7" diff ? (sorry I don't know indy's that well)
most granada's you'll find will have the larger 7.5" diff (espessialy the later ones, but you never know unless you check)



the DOHC granada's will have a 4cly version of an MT75 box (or an auto)

the 2.9 V6 will have a V6 version of an MT75 (or an auto) - these have a differnt bellousing pattern and its integral to the gearbox (ie. you can't swap it without shaping the whole case)

the 24v cossie V6's all have auto boxes - if you want a manual box you'll need a 2wd V6 version of an MT75 box and a flywheel from a 2.8 or 2.9 V6 with a manual box
also the 24v's all have 7.5" diffs
(there are a few cars built with 24v engines, the ones I've seen are all dax's - these engines are a very tight fit and very heavy ! )


Your best bet would be to look for an SOHC car (pinto) as they will have a type 9 box and probably a 7" diff
(I got one of these as my donor for free )

you can on the type 9, but the spacer is much easier and cheaper unless your getting the box reconditoned anyway


whatever granada you get you'll need a set of sierra front hubs as the granada ones have different geometry (unless you modify the front end of the car)
with a little work you can fit the granada hubs into the sierra uprights (cost me £10) so that you can have 5 stud hubs all round, but its a bit easier if you just use the sierra ones on the front and swap the rears if you want them to match

I would rethink your plans. Just do whatever it takes to be as standard as the vast majority of builders. If you've built before maybe, but I wouldn't. The norm just makes life a LOT easier. As an intellectual exercise, OK, it's a good question, but for really building something... building a car is hard enough for me!

AND there are a few guys not far from you who have or are building, so you'll have it relatively easy, compared to some.

Thanks for the info, I'm just trying to work out all my options before I get started (Hopefully early next year). I was intrested in the Granada mainly because I'm having problems finding a sierra with an auto box, the few I find are usually stupid money.
