Indy R BEC to CEC
bodger - 15/12/09 at 04:27 PM

I'm toying with the idea of putting a Toyota 4age & T50 box in my Indy R. Does anyone know if this will work with the R chassis without too much hassle. I'm a bit worried about space in the tunnel. I'm under the impression the R was really designed for a BEC setup. Obviously will need to weld in some engine & gearbox supports but I don't want to have to chop the chassis up too much.
Is there any data online giving the dimensions of this engine & gearbox combo?

Please, no more BEC v CEC posts, it's been done to death.

Hasn't martyn16v (sp?) got an Indy R with a redtop ?

i'd have thought the basic chassis was the same, just with different engine mounting plates fitted?

Some manufacturers widen the footwell area of the BEC chassis the tunnel doesn't need to accomodate a gearbox.

I've got a feeling this might be the case. Just waiting for MK to get back to me.

There's no size difference between the bike engine chassis and the car engine chassis, the tunnels are the same, they are both built on the same jig,so most 4 cylinder car engines will fit in there no problem, you will just have to weld in additional engine and gearbox mountings for your car engine to fit.

Yes he does

The bulkhead on mine was put 3 inches further back than normal to get the engine back a reasonable amount. I don't think the tunnel is any wider than normal, it is a bloody tight fit on the type 9 (clearance on one side had to be provided with a lump hammer). It is a very early chassis though, I know there's been a few changes since so I have no idea what everyone elses will be like.

If I could find a picture showing how much clearance there is in the tunnel I'd post it. I'm sure I took loads...
