How much clearence is there under the sump of a pinto and is this enough for normal roads?

no you need to cut the sump down by 30mm
and shorten the oil pick-up by the same
or you could damage the bottom of the sump
if it grounds out martin can mod the sump
for you i think he told me it was £60 but
dont quote me on that

For £60 you can buy an RS2000 Alloy sump! Already shallower and most importantly corretly wider.
In this situation width is an issue, as to not reduce oil capacity which could in turn result to overheating problems.

Theres a bloke called Ian ? who advertises in the back of Which Kit, A proper trade Box ad. He specialises in second hand ford bits, like mexico and RS bits, he always seems to be able to get hold of them. If you buy one check it carfully for damage. the first one i got was so badly damaged it wouldnt fit. The second one had a tiny pin prick leak that took ages to find, but luckily very east to repair. Also you need to watch out for knackered sump plug thread. Its worth getting them helicoiled before fitting it to your engine.

Not quite on topic for this forum but since it's under way:

I've got an alloy sump which is great as I can now go over speed bumps without grounding!

There can be slight snags in fitting as they don't appear to be all cast the same. My starter would not quite fit with the alloy fitted and is currently held in by slightly undersized bolts plus nuts as the proper ones just don't fit. Also, the clutch cable passes through a flange on the the alloy sump as well as the bell housing thus effectively shortening the cable - this can actually help if you're having problems with the cable being too long and having to pack it out at the top end.

The other snag is if you hit a steel sump it'll bend, if you clonk an alloy one it can crack.

I have seen a couple for sale in adverts in Classic ford mag Escort mk1 +2 specialist called R.W.D 07961 539557 £85 with pick up! also Madhouse classic fords 01978 824121 hope that is of some help they also have alloy bellhousings saving 5kg

alloy sump on ebay , damaged repaired, started at £20.. there is a bloke in alfreton does them. on exchange with pickup pipe. gunna start selling them meself in 2003£??. look on parts for sale on www.rhocar.org.uk if yers can bear it. its a robinhood site
