A jubillee clip is your friend. Put it round the column just behind the washer thingy and tighten it up- stops the column coming out....

Push bush in, push metal retainer plate down, fit worm drive clip tight above it and tighten clip around column. JD.

Damn to sllllllllllllowwwwwwwwwww.

have you fitted the inner bush from the top

i fitted the rubber bush into the bracket on the bulkhead then inserted the outer part of the plastic bush slid the column through the two then slid the inner part of the plastic bush back up the inner column to make a snug fit then slid up the retaining clip as some of you have suggested maybe a jubilee clip is in order

Did You fit the inner bush to the column BEFORE you fitted the column into/onto the car or did you fit the inner bush onto the column AFTER you fitted the column onto the car. ?
I ask becuase you should always fit the bush to the column & then column to car and then slide the bush DOWN the column into the outer bush which has a curve in its top face to match the curve on the inner bush. The metal clip is always difficult to get in the right place because it is directional, ie is will slide down the column but should never slide up the column (It will have been a right b*st*rd to have got on & up the column), if it is slideing up then it needs the jubilee clip behind it because it has been fitted the wrong way round OR it has been over stressed and its directionality has failed.
