R1 problem

Hi,
I build an R1 engined MK indy and yesterday was the first engine start. Engine is funktion the 1.,2.,4. exhaust manifold is discoloration to purple and hot, but the 3. manifold is only lukewarm. I have ignition spark. What is the problem? Carburator or compression? Can anybody help me? Sorry for my bad english and thanks your answers.

A good start would be checking the spark plug on number 3. Does it spark? Is it wet with fuel?

We had a similar problem with our blade engined Indy... it turned out to be the Spark Plug Lead no connecting properly. We (sorry - I) shortened the leads and did not make the contact correctly. Yours will be coil packs... try swapping a coil pack and see if this cures the problem even though it sparks it may not be enough - just to eliminate a possible fault.

I swapping the coil packs and the problem is selfsame. But the spark plug i think is dry.

Had a similar problem with my R1 on 1st start up. There is a way to reset the ecu by disconecting both battery leads and holding them together for 10 secs I think, maybe someone else knows if this is correct sequence. This was from a friend in the RAC, it worked a treat on mine.

If its a carb model and the plug is dry then its got too be a carb problem.

Check the floats are not stuck in the up position thus not allowing any fuel in,

A gentle tap on the float bowl may work, bike carbs are notorious for been a pain if left for a while with fuel in them, the fuel pressure is so low on carb engines they gum up and stick easily if left with fuel in them for long periods........

Tip, always drain the fuel off when standing for long periods.

what jon said .if that doesnt work try swapping one of the spark plugs around and see if it changes the problem to another pot. .if that fails then it could be a blocked pilot jet .unscrew the brass jet and clean with a piece of wire from a wire brush and try again.

i had a similar problem with bike carbs on my pinto which turned out to be an air leak with the joiner from carb to manifold. basically creating an over lean mixture on that cylinder.

took a bit of head scratching to sort
