engine woes
SyKaTurbo - 3/9/07 at 08:06 AM

I'm picking up my kit this weekend and I still have no idea what engine to put in it. At this rate it will be like a flintstones car.

The cheap "use the engine sat in my garage plan" is going to be fairly expensive and probably will end up costing the same as the bike engine. Going to do some Blackbird and Fireblade hunting this week to see whats about.

TimC - 3/9/07 at 08:19 AM

By the engine in your garage, do you mean the RST lump?

What's wrong with that?

SyKaTurbo - 3/9/07 at 08:27 AM

I decided to sell that. I have a Corsa C16XE lump. Rareish early engine but it's in need of a full rebuild and the conversion parts and when I start factoring costs its adding up to over a grand. I'm not a penny pincher or expecting to build the car for a minute amount but I want the best for my money really using alot of parts I already have lying around.

The problem I have with the bike engine is knowing very little about them. which to buy, finding a good one and paying a reasonable price. The actual fitting of it when i have it shouldnt cause me too much trouble I dont think.

Knowing my luck, i'll end up buying a complete dog of one lol.

Depending what you want the car for depend pretty much which engine you require.

If you want balls out fun with plenty of noise and adrenalin then BEC you must go. Pound for pound these engines provide the most power. Although not having reverse may seem like a problem it rarely is as you learn to drive not to use it!

If you want a more relaxed quieter ride although still very quick, a Car Engine would be your best choice. You can always upgrade to a higher power car engine but this generally costs much more than a BE.

Regarding bike engines... they rarely break (some transmissions/clutches are weaker than others) but they generally just keep going and are easy to repair typically. Dont let not knowing about then put you off....

Right ok, lets say I go for a fireblade. What do I need to get off it or am I better getting the whole bike.

Do I need any documentation from the donor bike for the registering/sva?

I do like the idea of the bike engine keeping weight down, compact, ballistic performance and noise with sequential change. The car is just going to be solely a toy for having fun with and in so either engine would be ok to fit.

SyKaTurbo - 3/9/07 at 09:02 AM

Also, what size van do I need for collecting the chassis. Transit/LWB or something bigger like a sprinter?

THE BEAR - 3/9/07 at 09:09 AM

As iam very new to the build scean what is bec short for and is any one going to donington so i can pick there brains up there on the sun thanks all

zxrlocost - 3/9/07 at 09:11 AM

hi LWB van

and if your on a general budget for an engine

Id say these two engines

R1 Carb 2000 5JJ engine

or ZX9r newest you can get for your budget

Id look for a bike thats been smashed but has everything on it you need complete engine and bits full wiring loom
fuel pump if you can
ign barrell and switch gear would be a bonus

higgsti - 3/9/07 at 09:17 AM

ive got a complete 1994 fireblade minus regulator and some of the fairings which have been swapped over to another bike with under 7k on the clock with v5 i had for spare engine but sold the car in march was keeping for another project but doesnt look like its going to happen.yours for £800 you can sell the rolling chassis for £300 with the log book.pre 95 blade will fly through emmisions too

SyKaTurbo - 3/9/07 at 09:35 AM

Advice please guys as this could be a bargain and I really wouldnt have a clue. Seems good enough and location is spot on too.

welderman - 3/9/07 at 09:42 AM

sounds pretty good, got my mates 95 blade for 650 quid for his build, but, as you live on the egde of Rivington, bec the way to go, i have lots of fun with the bikers on a Sunday, and take a trip over to Devils Bridge now and again too.

iscmatt - 3/9/07 at 10:15 AM

BEC = Bike Engined Car
CEC = Car Engined Car

THE BEAR - 3/9/07 at 11:15 AM

thanks iscmatt sorry to ask those silly quistions but its the best way to ask i think

BenB - 3/9/07 at 12:44 PM

Go BEC You'll love it!!! Cheap power, furious power : weight ratio etc etc!!! With a BEC you'll have to reckon on changing the clutch relatively frequently (every year or so) but it's not a major hassle on most bike engines (unlike car engines)....

Just be careful when you choose your differential ratio, it makes a big difference to how many RPM your engine will be doing @ 70mph when driving to / from places like Donnington. Cruising in a car doing 9000 rpm isn't much fun.... My ST cruises @ legal limit at 5500krpm and that's enough for me...

SyKaTurbo - 3/9/07 at 01:51 PM

Right, well just been onto MK again trying to find out what colour it will be

4007 Purple Violet

Had the chassis modded to accept my current 3 point harnesses then came the question of what engine am I fitting.

So.......i decided to go Blade engined! Tried and tested so can't go wrong! I hope!

zxrlocost - 3/9/07 at 02:57 PM

i id over 6700 miles on my barnet clutch in my megablade without any problems .ive also got a spare ecu and 5 litres maybe more of semi synthetic oil to go with sale.welderman do you buy a complete undamaged bike for the figure you quoted?

[Edited on 3/9/07 by higgsti]

welderman - 3/9/07 at 06:20 PM

Higgsti, no just the motor and all running gear, and it was 500 quid not 650 quid sorry, that was my blade motor.

chockymonster - 3/9/07 at 07:11 PM

Why did you mod the chassis for the harnesses?
Are you sure your 3 points will fit?

ReMan - 3/9/07 at 08:23 PM

welcome to the Indyblade OC
You won't be dissapointed, not at lgal speeds anyway

What your've forgot to say Higsti is yours is the 897cc ( SVA friendly version ) When I first looked to find an engine for my first build guys were selling these kits not bikes for £1000 as the westy guys go mad for them, gets you through SVA on a better emissions test.

Ive seen the bike as is and it really is a good buy, straight, just missing the rectifier which is no biggy as I think the kitcar workshop do an upgraded one for just over £100 as this is a weak link on the blades.

SyKaTurbo - 4/9/07 at 08:25 AM

Ok so if I were to fit that engine. What else would I need.

Manifold
Prop flange
Cables
Gear linkage

Seems like a good deal when you factor in its an undamaged bike. Will have word with my girlfriends Dad and hopefully come take a look as he knows a bit more about bikes than me. What does this part that is missing actually do then?

SyKaTurbo - 4/9/07 at 08:25 AM

I went for the 3 points as I already have a set in pretty much new condition so dont want to start selling things at a loss when they can go onto the kit. Yes they will fit as the eyelet is located just begind where the shoulder straps meet.

higgsti - 4/9/07 at 10:20 AM

im not certain but think the regulator alters the current from the alternator back to 12v

j30fos - 4/9/07 at 01:09 PM

as Ive said above its the blades weak link so the upgraded one would be a better choice

[Edited on 4/9/07 by j30fos]

tks - 4/9/07 at 01:54 PM

the rectifier destoys the voltage if higher then 14volts... sow thats the reason that when taking more current from it the heat will be less.
