steering rack width ?
ayoungman - 28/1/07 at 01:58 PM

Can someone please tell me the width of their steering rack that is fitted with extensions. I'm after the total length, end to end, before Track rod ends are fitted ?

i've got a standard escort rack---too short. 102cm
fitted extensions-------too long !
so I'm having to modify, so if someone could give me a ball park measurement, I can crack on
Cheers fellas !

Come on guys, I need the approximate length so that I can recut the thread and welde the extensions on in the right place. I don't have wheels yet so can't easily adjust toe in etc.

Hi mate for starters dont weld on the extentions its a sva no no i belive i have a better solution, i had the same problem a while back and my dad said when he did rallycross back in the day he used to buy longer trackrods lots of searching turned up nothing but at a classic show we were pointed in the direction of a guy in the buisiness and he said he can get some made, three months later and a result longer track rods (about 15mm longer) .
I will take some pics tomorrow and find his number he had a few pairs made up and the good bit is they only cost £40 a pair!

How about cutting the track rods a little shorter and re-cutting the threads?

you could then use your screw on track rod extensions

(I have exactly the same problem so am inerested to see how you get on....)

That's exactly what I did.
I'm using a standard width escort rack and cortina uprights.
Obviously, wasn't wide enough (excess toe-in) and so ordered extensions from Tiger. When fitted, the opposite happened - i.e too wide and excess toe-out!
So, I cut about 15 - 20mm off each track-rod and re-cut the thread. Use a die and stock to do this - a dienut will not cut a clean thread!

Andy.

What's the thread on the extension arms again?

I am trying to remember what I did! ah ! thats it
I fitted only 1 spacer at one end then adjusted to suit .you end up with slightly more lock one side than the other but you dont notice and it works fine. !
