Hi,
I'm hoping to use an 03 R1 in-tank fuel injection pump, and have a couple of questions about mounting it.
I know MK make a weld on boss for mounting fuel injected R1 pumps (think it costs £40+VAT), but has anyone had a go at making one themselves?
I assume it would simply involve drilling and tapping holes in a piece of aluminium plate, although perhaps the level of accuracy required to get a
good seal means its not a DIY job?
Also, the pump is quite tall, so is it best mounted within a sump at the bottom of the tank?

Hi JekRankin
I fitted 03 R1 pump in my tank.
I turned an ali. ring with a counterbore the same diameter as the pump. The counterbore depth was approx 0.5mm shollower than the thickness of the
mounting face of the pump. I then turned a steel ring with the internal hole being smaller than the pump diameter. This is to sandwich the pump
between ali. and steel rings. I then fixed the two rings together using 8 m6 tapped blind holes in the ali. ring.
The ali. ring was welded to the bottom of the tank, pump inserted (fitted new sealing ring) and the whole lot clamped up using the steel ring.
Been fitted for approx. 9 months and no leaks.
No issue with pump height because tank is quite tall. Fitted in the front of mini!
Hi Elmo,
Welcome!
My pump came with an aluminium ring with a counterbore which I think must have been used to clamp the pump to the tank in the bike.
I guess all I need to do is drill and tap an aluminium plate to the same PCD as the aluminium ring, although I'm not sure if I'll be able to
do this accurately enough by hand.
