How much oil in a dry sumped engine?

I have a BEC which has a dry sumped R1 injection engine.
Can anyone tell me how I start to figure out how much oil I put in it?
Should I try and find a window, or figure a level or something else?

Never had a dry sumped bec but always kept my cec's oil just bubbling over the baffle plate in the dry sump tank when ticking over. In my xflow dry sumped with oil cooler and remote filter it took 8 litres from totally dry.

hi couple of questions first,

never seen an r1 dry sumped before thats a new one on me??

but depends alos on the dry sump oil tank size aswell,

i run 7.5 litres in my dry sump tank with a 5 litre tank,

what size is your tanks???

the sight glass in the engine is useless just measure how far it goes up in the tank,

about 3/4 full ish.

Surely, there is no limit for oil if using a remote tank, as long as the remote tank is big enough to take what is put in?

The only reason there is a manufacturers recommendation is because of the capacity of the sump??

Without knowing the size of the tank, oil cooler, pipe runs no-idea on Literage.
But the above is the correct position to get too.

Agreed. But make sure it's with the engine running at idle - if you do it with the engine turned off you won't have enough oil in the system.

Just above the baffle is roughly where it is.
Unfortunately the car is at a mates house so I can't get measurements or pics, but here is one from when the dry sump was fitted:

As a general rule it is desireable to have the tank filled to just under the top baffle when the engine is running. Fill the tank part full (2/3?), run the engine and top up to the top baffle while it is running.
